My neighbors recently got hit with a computer virus, and they lost everything on their computer -- including their wedding photos! Now, before you go wagging your finger and muttering something about backing up data, you should know that my neighbors are not technically proficient folks. And, when you think about the fact that 86% of households own a computer, there's a good chance that there are a lot of people out there who are just like my neighbors -- putting all of their data eggs into one very unprotected, fragile basket. That's why Acronis True Image Home 2014 is so important.

Acronis True Image Home 2014 is truly the backup solution for everyone, making backing up and restoring important photos, videos, music, documents, apps, and other data extremely easy.

Instead of complicated command line instructions, Acronis True Image Home 2014 offers an intuitive graphical interface and helpful wizards that let you easily indicate how often you'll be backing up data and to which destination, in just a few clicks. You can even use Acronis True Image Home 2014 to create copies of your hard drive without interrupting your workflow!

Of course, no backup solution is worth its salt without an equally easy way to restore your critically important files! Well, with Acronis True Image Home 2014, you'll be able to retrieve your files and folders from backup in seconds and be on your merry way. In fact, you can even continue working while your data is being restored!

Have you ever tried other backup solutions that would have saved your hide -- if only you remembered to run them? Well, you'll be pleased to know that, with Acronis True Image Home 2014, incremental backups are automatically run every five minutes, letting you roll back ANY file to ANY point in time! As expected, you can always tweak the program and perform full and differential backups to suit your needs!

Read MoreStefan Hauber My first question is: Is it possible to secure my TI-password-protected data on my own ftp-storage.

The second one is more complicated and somehow a general question, but it also concerns TI:

On your website it is written that TI 2014 comes along with a free 5GB cloud storage.

So, how can a user accessing a cloud-service (of any provider) be sure that his data is secure there, even to the provider himself?

With my limited knowledge, I would suppose the only way is that the data is totally encrypted on his own computer in a standard and secure way.

And even given that, he must be sure, that his password, which is probably entered into TrueImage is not sent along with that.

To avoid that, perhaps it would make sense to implement an embedding of an external module (e.g. a dll), with an input of the data to encrypt and as output the encrypted data (and vice versa). Of course it would make sense, that this dll is open-source, so that there is no backdoor-possibility.

So the order would look like:
TrueImage - open-source crypt dll - TrueImage --internet-- TI Cloud

As said, I'm no expert, but only such a mechanism would make me somehow confident about storing data in a cloud.

Am I thinking wrong, am I too conerned or even too less? Any comments - especially from Acronis - are welcome.

Thanks a lot...

J.C. I won`t buy it. I bought Acronis 2011 here and it maybe has made 2 good backups. Only errors and failed backups afterwards. Other Acronis products in Server enviroments also give endless problems these days. Sadly not as good as they used to be.

Ric I've used Acronic 2011 and 2012 and the back ups and restores work--never had any issues. I restore my PC from Acronis backups every 3-6 months when I notice I got malware issues.

However, the sync feature isn't reliable. The few times I tried it I got errors and I stopped using it as it's not trustworthy. I don't know how well they've fixed it in v2014.

Mark Johnson Something to note: If you click the 'Buy Now' link here at BDJ, it will take you to a purchase page for the full version of TI2014 at $29.99, with no option to instead upgrade from an earlier version.
If you instead go to the acronis website, it displays a 'Cyber Week' sale ending Dec. 5th that has the full version at $29.99, upgrade version at $19.99, a 3-PC license for $79.99, and a 3-PC upgrade for $39.99

Read MoreLito I have used acronis TIH since 2009 and just recently upgraded to 2014 premium and have never had an issue with backups or restoring. I don't use any of their cloud stuff or sync features. I just use plain old image backup full and incremental. Mainly of my SSD drive. Saved me from when my first SSD just died on me for no apparent reason. Got a new one, restored the last backup and I was running again on a temp regular HDD, then did another restore of all the new changes when I got my new SSD. I have it scheduled to do 1 backup every day, where it will do 2 incremental backups followed by a full, with at most 2 full+increments of recent backups available all the time. Once a third full backup completes, it auto deletes the oldest full+increments. It works great that way for me. I also set it to validate the file after each backup.

@Stefan: yes you can password protect and also optionally encrypt the backups if you want. But you have to do it when you make the backup profile. For example I already made a backup profile for storage on a local drive w/o password/encryption, I cannot not enable the encryption/password option by editing the settings of this profile. For me to add that I need to make another backup profile and do a new backup under that profile.

Another option is to add a post command. I never did it myself but you can probably run an external command or batch file to do external encryption then copying or moving of the processed backup data to a cloud provider of your choice. But it would have to be done after the backup not as it goes and would require extra HD space.

Read Moremix624 I need to know.

Lets say I have saved everything from my Desktop PC´s harddrive onto my NAS.

Then my Desktop´s harddrive completely crashes and is useless....can
I just install a new harddrive and transfer my Win 7 with all my software and settings onto this 100% new harddrive ?

I just remove the crashed harddrive, insert a completely new harddrive and then transfer everything from my NAS unit to the new harddrive ?

That cant be possible since I would not have any Operating system then...hmm ? Anyone who knows ?

Mark Johnson @mix624 -- I have used previous versions of True Image for exactly what you are describing. From the menu of TI you create a 'bootable media', which can be a CD, DVD, USB flash drive, etc (depends on what your computer can boot from). Then when the hard drive crashes you boot from the created media, and restore the backup to the new hard drive.

You can also restore a backup to a different computer, but to restore to dissimilar hardware you need True Image Premium (called 'True Image with Plus Pack' in previous versions). If you go to the Acronis website the Premium version is also on sale (through Dec. 5th). You can also purchase True Image 2014 and then later decide to upgrade it to the premium version. Acronis sends you emails with sale prices for upgrades on a regular basis.

BitBucket I had one version of Acronis (2010 or 2011) that was nothing but trouble, but the 2013 version worked faultlessly, as far as I can tell.

Just curious, this version is suitable for Windows 8. Does that mean that the 2013 version won't work on Windows 8 or is it just that the UI has been updated to Metro?
