Organize Info With Linked Notes and To Do Lists

Platforms: Windows XP, Vista, 7
NoteRush Screenshot

Here's the problem with sticky notes, and with software that replicates the sticky note experience -- no relationships! Think about it. You jot some critical piece of info down on a notepad, stick it to your monitor. Then, something else comes up, and you either squeeze it onto that same piece of paper, or make a new one, and you stick it up there. Before you know it, you're drowning in a sea of sticky notes, all the same! It's time to take control, using today's discount software promotion -- NoteRush!

NoteRush lets you build notes and To-Do lists that are linked in intuitive, meaningful, and natural ways. With NoteRush, you'll be able to build multiple notes into linked sets that can be expanded or collapsed at your whim, containing all related information in one spot. Just a short time spent with NoteRush, and you'll experience better problem solving, comprehension, and data information than ever before. Each of your notes in NoteRush can contain text, icons, images, or hotlinks to the Internet. And all of it just floats conveniently on your desktop for easy access.

First, there's drag and drop. Arrange your notes however you wish by dragging and dropping them, even into other NoteRush documents if that makes sense. Doing online research? Drag and drop text from your browser right into NoteRush! There's never any risk of losing everything, since each document in NoteRush is saved as its own file. You can even use NoteRush with multiple monitors!

Robert Chan I have a question about activation. I install a lot of software and sometimes I need to reinstall Windows.
My question is: How many times can I activate the product? (I am the only user)

Ed4noterush Hi Robert: a single product key can be repeatedly activated on the same PC, no problem. Also, if you want to use NoteRush on more than one of your PC's then please just drop us an email and we'll be happy to extend the key so that it can be activated on more than one machine. ( That's a standard thing for us to do! )

Michael R. Seems to be a very interesting product...

I appreciate to be able to install it on all my computers. Is there a way to let NR synchronize the notes between my computers automatically (e.g. via LAN or even better (encrypted) FTP storage)?

Can I export the complete or only certain contents to another format (e.g. PDF, Word, TXT, ...)?

Ed4noterush Hi Michael: the features that you mention are definitely things which we plan for future versions of NoteRush. Some sort of sharing over the local-network/internet together with encryption and export facilities are high on the list.

For now, NoteRush writes content into flat files that can be easily backed-up, moved and shared on network drives.

Robert Chan I hope that there is the option to resize pictures that have been inserted.

I have inserted the same picture in different notes, and sometimes the picture is large and sometimes the picture is small...don't know why...

Read MoreCharlotte Sinclaire Hi. I am thinking of using NoteRush to plot a novel. I realize that alongside any notes I may create for To-Do lists, Errands, etc., I could have an initial note for "Writing," and drill on down through "Fiction," "Novels," and then create notes for the specific projects, then work within those. But I was wondering if -- just to keep things uncluttered while I work on my creative projects -- if one can save more than one back-up file and load it at will ... so that I could have one NoteRush file to open for my practical everyday stuff and one to open when I want to work on my creative efforts (novel writing, music, etc.)

Either way, this looks like a great product -- I really like the interface and how it shifts left/right and up/down as the information expands ... at first I was afraid that when the notes got too deep, I wouldn't be able to get back to the control icon to drag them over further, and they would run off the screen, but you've thought of the solution to that! I am excited to find your software!

Ed4noterush Hi Robert: thanks for the question, pictures can be resized up to the available width of the note. If you want to increase the note's width then grab it's right hand border and give it a pull. Then click the image until the resize handles appear at each corner. You can then click a handle and pull it to resize to the desired size. Hope this helps.

Charlotte Sinclaire Hi. Another question ... I'm experimenting with NoteRush and it seems that it is almost constantly asking me if I want to save. Is there not some way for it to save in the background every few minutes, or for me to adjust it so that it doesn't ask so often? The Save dialog popping up so often is annoying, but of course, I want my notes saved!.Auto-save would be a great feature if it isn't already in there. (I haven't found it yet, if so.)

Ed4noterush Hi Charlotte: thanks for the comments!
NoteRush can have multiple documents (=files) open at the same time and each document can be edited and closed or opened whenever you want. If you trace a note up through it's hierarchy you get to the owning document.

In your case, you could create two docs (files) and have either or both open depending on, as you say, which particular thing you're working on. Hope that helps.

Ed4noterush Hi again Charlotte: regarding the save dialog, NoteRush will keep asking you to give your new document a filename so that it can save it and ensure you don't lose any work. Once you've given the document a filename it will stop asking you to save and it will auto-save in the background to that filename.

The development idea was to make it easy to edit a note / notes and take the burden of choosing when to save away from the user and make it automatic.

Ed4noterush Hi Michael: good question! If we can fit those changes into this current major version (2.0) then yes, it would be a free upgrade. I'm not sure that's going to be possible though given the demands on our time at the moment, but we'll see.

What we could certainly do and would be happy to do is to give everyone that purchases today a chance to purchase the next version (when it comes out - at least 6-8 months away I would say) at a special discounted rate. Hope that helps!

Alexander Deliyannis Q1: I assume that NoteRush files can be saved in a Dropbox folder --which is more than enough for me to keep it synchronised across my computers- or is there an issue with that? Being a uni-tasking person I only have one PC open at a time.

Q2: The 'flat files' you mentioned, are they in some standard format (e.g. HTML, RTF, TXT or XML) readable by other software, or some proprietary format? I'm always concerned about lock-in with non-standard files.

aladdin T This program is still in the development stage and for what it does it is very expensive. And, then within six to eight a new major update is expected and even at discount it will be very expensive.

The program should be priced at $20 and not $40, for what it does. So at 50% discount now and later when the major update is released at 50% discount for upgrade, it is very expensive at $40.

The program is in it's infancy, and with continued development, every so often it will come out with a major update, asking for more and more money.

Ed4noterush Hi aladdin T: thanks for your comments. Just to be clear: NoteRush is a new product and we believe there's nothing quite like it on the market today.

As I said, any new versions are at least 6-8 months away and that's on the optimistic side. Our support commitment for each version is unlimited and ongoing and we're more than happy to offer discounts to current (and new) users should we bring out a new version sooner.

Robert Chan Just purchased the product. (using my real name). When activating, there is the option to choose between activating online and activating offline. what's the difference?

Read MoreEd4noterush Hi Alexander: some good questions here. In reply:
1) Yes, NoteRush can be used with DropBox, that's actually a good way to keep synchronised, as you suggest. Anyone considering using DropBox in this way would be best advised to only have the NoteRush document open on one PC at a time to avoid any file-overwriting issues - again we'll address this issue of synchronising files in a more complete way in the future.

2) NoteRush's file format is proprietrary. We couldn't find a generic file format with a footprint small enough to tick all the boxes. So for now it's non-convertible. As discussed earlier, exporting to different doc types is on our list of pending new features, and the fact that it's being discussed here does help raise its priority for us.
Thanks for the questions!

Read MoreEd4noterush Hi Robert: great, thanks for the purchase! Offline activation is designed for users that do not have an internet connection or are behind (perhaps corporate) blocking firewalls that won't allow a connection to the licence servers. We would always recommend to choose "online" activation as it's much simpler!

Regarding inserting links to files, this can be achieved though drag-dropping the file / folder while holding down left "ALT" key. This will give you a clickable link within the note.

Thanks and we hope you enjoy using NoteRush!

Read MoreAlexander Deliyannis After playing around with Noterush, I find the interface both imaginative and usable. In practice, it's a modern take to the classic outliner so much discussed in http://www.outlinersoftware.com

I have a few points which for me (and, I believe, other outliner fans) are quite important in order for such software to be really useful. You may take them as suggestions/questions re development:

1. With the exception of the hotkey to bring up the pinboard, there seem to be no keyboard shortcuts for working with the program. For example, to create a new note I need to click on (+) with the mouse, click inside the new note title and _then_ start typing. To finish the note, I have again to resort to using the mouse. When writing notes, this can become disruptive to one's flow.

2. The background-less operation is innovative, but not always necessary practical. If there are a lot of icons on the desktop, the background becomes confusing. Same for many programs. An option to fade the background when working on Noterush would be nice.

3. Last but not least, the strict hierarchy provided by an outline has its limitations in associating complex information, e.g. for a book. That's why modern information organisers, e.g. mind mapping programs, provide ways to link to notes across the hierarchy. Is there such a possibility foreseen within Noterush's _data-model_ (even though the interface itself does not provide the option yet) ?

Read MoreEd4noterush Hi Alexander: you raise some interesting points for discussion and we very much appreciate the input. In reply to your points (briefly):

1) Keyboard shortcuts: yes, we probably could provide more support for keyboard driven operation and use some more automatic keyboard focus techniques to reduce the amount of clicking required

2) Background fade-in: interesting idea - it would be possible to fit a sort of "page frame" around the app to kind of frame the content when the desktop's quite busy - we'll also look at that

3) Cross-tree linking: yes, it's a posssibility, and been on our minds for some time, but it does introduce further complexities within tree-navigation such as management of recursive node groups. Point noted though, we'll be looking at this one as well. If it can be done in a way that doesn't sacrifice usability then it's definitely a good feature to have

Again thanks for your input, it all helps make the product even better and increases useability and potential product reach!

Read Moreddalian Ed,
I watched the video and went through the web site. It is a very interesting product. Something I always appreciate is access to the help manual. A couple quick questions:

1. Are the notes printable, individually and as a complete document with child notes, images, links...?

2. Can the notes be encrypted?

3. Are the notes (or content) and images compatable with most common office software for cutting, pasting & copying?

4. Are there plans to offer a mobile version of the software when sync becomes possible. Android, IPhone...?

Read MoreEd4noterush Hi Duane: thanks for your questions, your input is appreciated. In answer:

1) Printing: it's not possible to print at the moment, we'll be tackling that in the future. We want to get it right because there are various ways to recurse the content tree in order to print it

2) Encryption: not possible at the moment. Again, that's a feature we'll be tackling in the future (see discussions above)

3) Cut/copy/paste: links to images can be embedded in any note and text can be copy/pasted into NoteRush notes from multiple sources (e.g. browser, documents etc.). NoteRush always stores links to images, not the images themselves in its document file. This is in order to keep the file size down to a reasonable size.

4) Mobile support: after sync becomes possible we'll be looking into this requirement as well for sure. This will probably require some indepth thought and an interface specially adapted for mobile.

Thanks again... Ed

Read MoreCharlotte Sinclaire I, too, have a busy desktop, so I totally like Alexander's suggestion, above, re the faded background to make NoteRush pop more when you're using it.

And I definitely would like a way to print, at some point. Not so much for stored info as the fact that I plan to plot my novel using this software (or try to, anyway, to see how the process works in the end), and it would be nice to be able to print that information

But more than any other feature right now, I wish that, once a new note is created -- a hot key would be great, but even if I have to click on the "+" sign to create a new note -- I wish that the note were then immediately editable.

I find it tedious to have to click to create the note, then click again to make the text field editable, in particular because it seems I have to be very precise where I click in the note field, or, alternatively, I must double-click wildly to get the cursor ready.

I am a keyboard person, doing everything I can on the keyboard without going to the mouse. This extra mousing definitely disrupts the work flow, as Alexander pointed out.

If you can possibly make that note field immediately editable -- title and body both -- that would be the biggest boon for me, and a hot key to create new notes would complete it. Alexander had the right idea there! Hope to see THESE particular upgrades very soon -- like yesterday!

(Also, being able to "enter" past the title line and just go right to the body would be great; in my case, I don't need titles for all the child notes; can't even remember if that is possible but hope so, or I'm going to find this not working the way I hoped.)

I also just bought the product and expect to make good use of it. That said, IMHO strictly hierarchical structures are not ideal for planning novels where convolutions and interrelationships among scenes abound. Same for project-related notes (my own need). I do hope that cross-tree linking will be possible in the near future.

You might want to check out a more specialised product that's been featured here recently --I expect it will be again in the future- namely StoryBook Pro http://www.bitsdujour.com...ybook-pro/

Few thoughts after only a few minutes.

1. Have an auto-save feature. Being asked to save every time you try to do something is intrusive and annoying.
2. If titles are required then they should automatically be activated and the cursor waiting to type when a New Document, or Note is added. Trying to click on the exact spot to type is a unnecessary to make the user go through.
3. As others stated blur the background (better allow user to establish the level opacity).
4. Key commands to add notes. Clicking on the little + is ok but if you use it a lot I can see where it might get tedious.
5. Not sure if this is possible but have it remain on the desktop without showing over other programs.

Otherwise nice looking and I like to ability it appears to offer.

Read MoreAlexander Deliyannis @bvssunnydale re encryption: this may be a rather subjective view, but I personally prefer that encryption does not take place at the individual program level, but rather at the folder level. I have an encrypted folder for sensitive files synced across my PCs; there are several solutions for this. The advantages of such an approach IMHO:

(1) I can use whichever software you like for its main features, rather than its encryption capabilities, which rarely go hand-in-hand.

(2) I do not have to remember a multitude of passwords.

(3) I avoid lock-in with proprietary encryption formats, especially for software requiring activation. I wish Ed all the best in his business, but I know some very hopeful software whose developers have eventually closed down and now their users can't get to their files because they can no longer activate the programs in their new PCs. At least if the files are unencrypted one can usually find a way to mine the data.
