I remember paying hundreds of dollars for a 1.4 megapixel digital camera and being blown away by the concept of digital photography. Today's digital cameras top out in the double digit megapixel range, and people are spending a lot of money to get the highest resolution possible out of their pictures.

Yet, even with all of the money spent, most of these consumers are not ending up with the best quality digital photos. That's because the most commonly used picture format, JPEG, is subject to image degradation every time you resize, crop, brighten, remove red-eye, or make any other alteration to the original. Bet you didn't know that, Mr. 12 Megapixel!

Image degradation manifests itself as rings or blocks that appear along the edges of items in your pictures. Every time you open an image in an editor, the editor uncompresses the file, makes your changes, and then recompresses it, causing further loss. The more changes you make, the worse it gets!

But there's good news. Better JPEG fixes your digital photos with absolutely no loss in image quality. Check it out - you can rotate, crop, and resize your photos, add date/time stamps, remove red eye, and more - all without sacrificing any of the clarity of the original file!

Better JPEG approaches image editing in an innovative way which does not require the entire image file to be decompressed. This is the key to preserving the impact of your most important photos, and getting the most out of your digital camera!

What's more, if you work with multiple pictures, you can apply the same modifications to all of them as a batch. Also, if you want to apply a series of edits to one or more pictures, Better JPEG lets you save the edits as a macro for run-once ease of use.

So, if you're a digital photography enthusiast who likes to tinker and adjust images to make them perfect, Better JPEG is absolutely the right weapon for your arsenal. Your pictures will never have looked better than with Better JPEG!

David Gilmour I have been using BetterJPEG PhotoShop plug-in for months, and it has earned an important place in my image editing toolbox. The standalone product being promoted here seems to offer a few extra features and benefits, and at this price I plan to buy it too.

I work in 16-bit as much as possible, but sometimes after I commit the final image to an 8-bit JPEG, for instance when preparing a series of images for upload to an album printer, I will notice a detail that I overlooked in an image, which requires touching up. Rather than going back to the Photoshop version I created during editing and then through my production sequence again, I just make the correction directly to the JPEG, using BetterJPEG to open and close the file. This saves me precious time while avoiding the perilous image degradation which normally occurs when re-saving a JPEG.

Read Moreadrian williams The main features I use I would look for are - resizing, rotating, cropping and selection.

Resizing is covered in this software
Cropping - also good
Rotating - very limited - 90 degrees or 180 only - can't find any way in rotating an image, say 5 degrees, or align to a mark
Selection - box or fixed sized rectangular marquee only - no magic wand or masking options.

So, for me, it would satisfy resizing for web development but can't do a simple task like rotating an image I've scanned that's slightly rotated. It wouldn't, for example, allow me to create a library of scanned dvd discs. I'd scan, align then select the image using a circular marquee and then save the final edited image. I can't get betterjpg to do any of this.

Please tell me I've missed something, the rotation flexibility is a must-have for me. An improved range of selection would also be ideal.

Alex Molodozhenov Adrian, Currently BetterJPEG application is mostly focused on JPEG operations that can be done without full re-compression, such as 90 degree rotation, crop, canvas expansion, brightness, color adjustment, local changes such as date stamp or red eye removal. As the application evolves it gained some additional features going beyond the scope of lossless operations, e.g. resizeor option for a lossy rotation. Free angle rotation is not there yet but we are planning on adding it in coming versions.

adrian williams Thanks Alex, The software certianly works in the areas you highlight - The opportunity of free-angle rotating would enhace the software even more. I probably will buy it.

Alex Molodozhenov Adrian, All minor upgrades (same first version number) are free, major upgrades are currently offered with 50% discount. Major upgrades are rare, we only had it once since 2004, and it happened recently (July 2008), so upgrades will be free for quite a while now.
