A robot vacuum is able to keep the floors clean enough to cut down on the frequency you need to manually vacuum. Select a vacuum that is well-trained in navigation, can clean corners and stairs, and that has large bins that only needs to be cleaned out every now and then.

There are models that mop and charge themselves, which is a feature essential for families with pets or children. Many of the top performers in our tests offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is an excellent alternative for those who want a a fully automated, hands-off cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the robot's dustbin when it is full.

Both robots do well picking up surface debris off carpets and hard floors, and they are very good in maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart maps of your home to aid the i3+ in its navigation and clean up efficiently. However unlike the i7+ and other top rated robots we test, the i3+ doesn't have obstacle-avoidance capabilities which means it can get stuck on things like socks or power cords, and may have issues navigating across surface transitions like hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests cleaning the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other clutter it may encounter. You should also keep the dustbin and filters clear to avoid becoming clogged. When automatic vacuum i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or the battery is empty, it returns to its docking station and automatically emptying its trash into the station's dust bin and continues cleaning where it started. The battery's lifespan is around an hour-and-a-half of continuous usage. It takes 3 hours to fully charge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot i7+ is a top model from iRobot’s flagship line, and it comes with the most recent features. It has self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most important feature is its self-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, which lets it map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can control your robot via the app or by voice.

In our tests, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our runner-up and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surface types, including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy the dust bin is self-emptying, which eliminates a major source of maintenance and cuts down on the cost of maintenance.

We were also impressed with the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot on how to start, stop, or pause cleaning sessions as well as move around the room and vacuum a particular area. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. We were able, once connected, to speak commands to the i7+ like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is a sports car that is amidst a sea of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It's got the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for many households however, it can also fit perfectly next to the coffee table or shelves that you can spin around like a magic tool.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense lithium-ion battery which produces energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then releases fresh air into your home. The model also comes with an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in about 3.5 hours and provides easy access to two attachments as well as an clip for a wand. This is a huge improvement over older Dysons that require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its limited run time. As CR's tests show, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is an average and not a remarkable run time for an electric cordless vacuum powered by batteries. This is enough time to vacuum a typical-sized home however, it's not enough time to reach every spot. (A second run usually works). This model has its own advantages however: it's light and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is noticeably superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of iRobot's most popular robot vacuums The 694 is an affordable model that's a great choice for people who don't want to spend too much on a robotic. It was able to pick up the majority of types of debris and sizes during our tests, and frequently went over the same area multiple times to ensure an extensive clean. Its flat front end helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls which is a nice addition.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and help you navigate your home. However, it isn't equipped with the mapping capabilities of more advanced models, such as our top picks, the i3+EVO and j7+ Series. This means that it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't in good condition, and often will run out of battery before making it back to its base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 in that it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower cost of recurring costs and has more advanced automation abilities and is better able to navigate itself. It also has a larger dustbin and can charge faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba. It also comes with physical boundaries and can be controlled with the voice assistant on your smartphone. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a brand you see on all sorts of home electronics So it's no surprise that they're also one of the most popular mop and robot vacuum manufacturers. Jet Bot AI+ has a cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app gives you plenty of options to customize your robotic cleaner, including virtual barriers mopping water levels, behavior modification docking frequency settings and much more. It's easy to comprehend and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our testing of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors, and also handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86% of it. However, it did not do particularly well at avoiding higher-up objects like cords or socks, which was disappointing. It's also a little more expensive than the other models we tested which could be a deal-breaker for some shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that you can access through the app, and you can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature lets you keep track of your pets or children when you're away from home. The filter and dustbin are washable for quick, easy cleanup. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with an automatic clean station which helps to keep the robot's bin clear and maximizes suction power.

In contrast to other robotic vacuums that are made for carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for hard floors. The robots come with an extra-wide cleaning path, as well as a dustbin that is 2X bigger than the competitors. This lets them clean the area for longer. Additionally, they come with two side sweepers to clean up around edges and in corners. The POWERSERIES model also comes with AutoSense that automatically adjusts the power level according to whether it's picking up dirt that is on the surface or embedded. The vacuum also has an app that allows users to see the virtual map, manage functions, and set schedules. You can also monitor the status of the vacuum and then send it to the dock for charging at the touch of a single button. The app lets you customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum so that you can discern where it is focusing or if it has gotten stuck.

The app also makes it easy to manually steer the robot should you need to. For instance my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that has a tendency to make it difficult for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however, continued to move across the border without ever registering the high point. The ability to program a cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
