1. Energy efficiency

Frost can build up inside fridges and block the shelves, leaving no space to store food items. This can make the fridge work harder, which can increase the amount of electricity consumed. A refrigerator that is frost-free can stop this from happening by keeping the coils clear of ice. Frost develops when water vapor condenses on the cold coils, which distribute refrigerant. To reduce condensation, look for a frost free model with an element that heats up that is anti-sweat. These heating elements can be integrated into the frame of a freezer and activated by a sensor when the temperature rises above 32 degrees Celsius. They are more efficient than manual heaters and consume less energy.

Take note of the type of refrigerant used in the freezer. Some old fridges and freezers contain hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). These powerful greenhouse gases cause changes in the climate and deplete the Ozone. The EU is phasing them out and new appliances should use refrigerants that are free of HFCs, such as R600A and R290.

Select a freezer that makes use of Greenfreeze as the refrigerant for those who want to avoid frost. This is a mixture of propane, isobutane and the cyclopentane which has very low potential for ozone depletion. You should consider a chest freezer that uses Greenfreeze. These models emit no CFCs and have a lower impact on the Ozone.

2. Convenience

Frost on the freezer can stop cold air from reaching the food, causing the fridge to work harder. This is a waste of energy, which results in higher electric bills. Frost-free refrigerators are able to avoid this issue by using a temperature sensor, heating coils and a timer to periodically warm the coils. This melts any ice that could have formed.
