About Toto

Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word that means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.

The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour helped them become a household name across the globe.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads of previous albums and includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

When they record the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Musicians

Toto is a rock group from the United States that enjoyed their greatest success in the 1980s. The band was founded by session musicians with experience and has sold more than 40 million albums around the world.

Toto was the first album released by toto in 1978. The album was a huge hit and launched the band into international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 more albums, all of which have also been hits.

Toto composed their first and only film score in 1984 for the film Dune. This was a major undertaking that required the entire group to be involved. The album that was released, Kingdom of Desire, was a record that also had a great success. After a world tour, Bobby Kimball quit the band. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen, formerly of Le Roux. The band continued to push forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album featured a number of songs that were hits such as "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and stepped away from the stage. This gave each member of the group the opportunity to pursue their individual projects. In 1996, the band reformed for a tour and an album. It was the first time that all of the original members were on stage together for more than 10 years.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the final time that all the original Toto members Toto were performing together. Following this, the group was again disbanded. Toto came back together for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise money for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all of the original Toto members appeared on stage together in over 31 years. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Tours

Toto has remained one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, releasing huge hits like "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." The band's anthemic arena-rock is inspired by a variety of styles that include progressive rock, world beats, soul, and jazz.

The band experienced several setbacks throughout their final times, despite their fame. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence for health reasons. Drummer Shem von Schroeck stepped in, but the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take off from touring following a string lineup changes and a disappointing string of releases. Toto returned to touring in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album was a return to their best form, and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.

Toto's music is the same today as it was in the 1970s and 1980s and is growing in popularity with every new generation. Their success has made them an integral part of pop culture. Their live performances are always full of energy and excitement.
