Along with the photo and other personal details the majority of drivers' licenses contain an alphanumeric number that is issued by the agency that issued it to the holder. Some states have included a barcode to their driver's licenses to facilitate electronic records.

New York has a number of different license classes specifically designed to meet the needs of drivers and the type of vehicle. As someone who's helped countless New Yorkers get their licenses, I can tell you that understanding the distinctions is essential whether you're looking to cruise down Broadway in an automobile or drive a big vehicle through the Adirondacks.

New drivers who are starting an initial license class have to first apply for a learner's permit which is valid for 6 months and legally certify them as learners. In this time, they must be accompanied by a licensed driver who can teach them the rules. After logging 50 practice hours including 10 hours at night, they can advance to the regular Class D license.

An Enhanced Driver's License may be the most suitable option for those who frequently travel to Canada or Mexico frequently. It's an WHTI compliant ID that can also be used to prove US citizenship at both maritime and land ports of entry. EDLs are only accessible to those with valid driver's licenses and a passport or naturalization certificate that proves their US citizenship.

How do I apply for a driver's license?

A New York State driver's permit is a document that allows you to drive in a motor vehicle. It is a right that comes with a number of restrictions that all drivers must adhere to in order ensure safety behind the steering wheel. Before you can get your license, you will have to pass a written exam based on the information in the New York Driver's Manual. What are the prerequisites for obtaining an driver's license?

You should read the manual thoroughly and as often as possible to prepare for your test. If you don't, it could result in delays, or stop you from getting your driver's license.

After passing the knowledge test, you will need to complete a 5-hour mandatory pre-licensing course in order to be eligible to schedule your road test. After passing the road test, you will then receive your driver's license in the mail. You may be required to pass a vision or driving skills test depending on the type of license you're applying for.

You can exchange your valid driver's licence from another state or Canada in exchange for the New York Driver's License if you already have one. To do this, your out-of-state license must include your photo, be valid or have expired less than 24 months prior the date you submit your application for a New York Driver's License. You'll also need to submit six points of documentation that proves your identity and date birth. The DMV has a tool online to help you determine the acceptable documents.
