Creating effective workplace relationships is crucial to make teams function effectively, speedily and profitably. Good interpersonal skills, mutual trust, and an ability to communicate well are critical in order to create these relationships. In a nutshell, effective workplace relationships create a positive image that the company can proudly point to. They also give the impression that the company is a socially progressive and environmentally friendly organisation. Communication is the key to effective workplace relationships. Teams have to communicate with each other to understand the needs, expectations, and requirements of the other. This allows them to identify and reach agreement on performance criteria, targets, and performance feedback. Through effective communication, members are allowed to voice their opinions constructively and are given useful feedback, which improves their performance. A team that does not communicate openly and is unable to reach consensus on performance criteria, will likely experience resistance from both sides. Furthermore, it will be unable to deliver effective results because of poor performance standards. Achieving good workplace relations requires that managers set high standards for performance, both individually and collectively. The best managers set clear and high standards for behaviour and productivity. If managers fail to set these standards and fail to enforce them, a work team may feel under pressure to perform below satisfactory results, which will result in poor performance feedback, and a decrease in productivity. Moreover, a team that is unable to achieve good results will have poor morale, which further decreases productivity. The process of building effective workplace relationships involves a number of key elements such as good communication skills, open communication, and respect for each others' thoughts and ideas. Good relationships are built through open communication and clearly articulated expectations. This allows for clear communication, and the exchange of ideas. Respect is a key element that promote cooperation, and a willingness to compromise. In addition, the willingness to share information is critical when establishing and maintaining good relationships within a work team. Effective communication skills include: using appropriate language, clarifying assumptions and expectations, and accepting others' points of view. When managers do not communicate information effectively, they will decrease their ability to build effective workplace relationships and therefore, their ability to achieve desired outcomes. It is necessary for managers to know what goals are required, strategies that will be implemented, and the knowledge required to achieve those goals. Once managers have this information, they need to be willing to put in the time and effort to create workable strategies to achieve those outcomes. Communication and conflict resolution skills are also crucial to building effective workplace relationships. When managers fail to resolve conflicts in a positive way, they increase the likelihood that their own positions will be threatened. Ultimately, this can mean that both negative and positive relationships are jeopardized and negatively affect each employee's performance. Management must take a proactive stance when it comes to resolving conflict in order to foster good relationships. This is most effective when it comes to resolving conflicts with co-workers. In order to foster effective workplace relationships and to achieve desired results, managers need to provide the right amount of support to individual team members. Individual support can be defined as the actions that an individual takes to improve their own performance, and increase their own understanding of the organisation. Communication skills include communicating expectations of others, providing feedback to team members, providing examples of how things are done, and communicating expectations for others to match those of their team members. Managers also need to maintain effective communication when it comes to sharing information, and providing information that others need to know. The process of building effective workplace relationships involves more than just rewarding individuals when they are doing a good job. It also includes rewarding people who are performing well or even creating a positive working environment where everyone is thriving. This will not only create a better working atmosphere, but it will also create a better working relationship between team members. When employees know that they are appreciated for their work, they are more likely to work harder and longer, and to do things beyond what is expected. When they understand that they are valued for their efforts, rather than for salary or a specific role, they will be willing to ask for and provide help, instead of expecting someone else to do it for them.
