How to Buy a Real German Driving License

Some lucky American expats can walk into their local Fuhrerscheinstelle with their US driver's license to obtain an German driving license without having to pass the practical and written tests.

The requirements can vary greatly from one office to the next (and even from city to city) and be quite strict. Here's the information you need.

Legality

A valid German license is proof of your training and skills. This is a great asset to have in case of a job interview, or when traveling around Europe. However, it's expensive. The total cost could be in the thousands of Euros, depending on the type of license required and the length of time. This cost might include tuition and learning materials, driving lessons and fees for authorities and exams. Driving schools have their own fees that can vary from school to school.
