About Toto

The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.

In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household brand all over the world.

After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Music

Toto is a rock group from America who achieved their greatest success in the 1980s. The band was created by session musicians who had experience and has sold more than 40 million albums in the world.

The first toto album was the self-titled Toto, released in 1978. It was a huge hit that helped the band gain international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 albums which have all been a hit.

In 1984, Toto wrote their first, and to this date only, film score for the film Dune. It was a massive undertaking and the entire band had to be involved. The album that was released, Kingdom of Desire, was another successful record. After a world tour, Bobby Kimball quit the group. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen from Le Roux. The band pushed forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album featured a number of songs that were hits, including "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and stepped away from the stage. This gave every member of the group the opportunity to explore their own solo projects. In 1996, the group was reunited for a tour and an album. This was the first time the original members took to the stage together for over 10 years.

The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared together on stage at the same time. Following this, the group was again disbanded. Toto returned for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all of Toto's founding members performed together. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Tours

Toto has been one of the most popular rock groups for more than three decades, scoring massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line,"" and their 8X platinum smash, "Africa." With a range of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world beats to soul and jazz The group continues to delight fans with their acoustic arena rock.

The band experienced several setbacks throughout their final years, despite their popularity. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Drummer Shem von Schroeck stepped in and the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take off from touring following a string lineup changes and a disappointing string of releases. Toto returned to touring in 2012 following the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album marked a return to their best form, and the tour that accompanied it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.

Toto's music is as popular now as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, gaining new fans with each passing generation. Their success has made them a permanent presence in pop culture, and their live performances are always filled with energy and excitement.
