Narwal Freo X Ultra

A top-rated, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that adopts a new approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a very well-built machine. The price of $1400 might be difficult to swallow, but it is often available to make it more affordable. The unit looks great and the base station occupies only a tiny space in the corner of the room.

The design of this machine addresses some problems we've encountered with other robotic mop and vacuum units, such as brushes that get caught in hair, and the vacuum brush not being able to reach bare flooring beneath furniture. The sweeping performance is impressive on carpets and bare flooring. The vacuum/mop unit has an excellent level of debris pickup, and the mop can absorb the bare floor quickly.

The mops also employ a smart system to clean along the edges of furniture and walls. The robot is able to effortlessly avoid obstacles like toys, food bowls and backpacks. But it can get stuck or entangled with smaller and less hefty objects such as shoelaces, USB cables, and pen.

We used this robot to vacuum and mop a variety of pile carpet tiles, FLOR rugs, and hardwood floors within a large, open house floor plan. It was able to vacuum and mop the 90 square meters in 170 minutes, with FREO Mind enabled. This is a bit more than the average for Gen 4 robots.

A number of features set this robot apart from other robots in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software and hardware enhancements designed to keep it at the top of its category. It promises 3.5 hours of autonomy for environments of up to 260 square meters.

Freo's app allows you to modify various functions, such as how often the robot comes to its base station. You can also change the frequency of mopping as well as the power level (silent or smart) or the mopping humidity. The app can identify heavily soiled spots and create an appropriate cleaning route. It can also distribute detergent or raise the carpet pads.

Other impressive features include a fast charging battery, a simple-to-read display on the robot's underside and a handy dock door that is easy to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is perfect for apartment and home owners who want to reduce their chores and keep their homes tidy.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele has a track record of quality and innovation in the field of robotic vacuuming. The new Miele robot is designed to take the cleaning capabilities to a new level with its smart features.

The RX3 has dual suction smart navigation system that incorporates 3D mapping and a camera which transmits a live image to your smartphone for effortless control. Its powerful four-stage cleaning system ensures excellent dust removal on hard and carpet floors, while intuitive side brushes with a swing-out feature and two suction channels clean in corners. Its 8.5 cm height allows it to reach under furniture that is low. Front cameras and an infrared sensor aid in navigating obstacles, thresholds, and obstructions with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our tests on how well it was able to clean baking powder around corners and baseboards. Its suction of 2,500 Pa was a bit weaker than other robots however, it moved swiftly and was extremely quiet. It didn't mop and its cleaning pad that was removable was a challenge to attach. It also couldn't take on dirt that had dried up.

Its app is basic, lacking advanced features like multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It does support Alexa, but its voice controls aren't particularly intuitive or responsive. It's also a little erratic when it returns to the charging station following a run. Other robots can follow a wall or trace a previous route however the RX3 stumbles around until it finally gives up.

Another issue we had was with its clever features, specifically the mapping function as well as digital keep-out zones. While it did a good job of avoiding our furniture legs and shoes but it could easily be caught by socks and cables, and it was not able to manage the tassels that adorn rug. This is the reason we decided not to include it in our Best Buy list. The Scout RX3 offers a good price and impressive performance. It's worth looking into as an alternative to traditional uprights.
