Top 5 Recommended Cribs

You want a crib that's sturdy and safe. Make sure you choose a solid wood crib and slat spacing less than 2.4 inches wide.

One of our most favored choices is the Stokke Sleepi Crib. It comes with four different mattress heights and is made of sustainable and renewable New Zealand Pinewood. It also includes a toddler rail included.

1. Sturdy

A baby spends most of their time in their crib, so it's important to choose a crib that's solid enough. Find cribs that meet the safety standards and regulations established by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Consumer Product Safety Commission and focus on structural integrity. Also, you should avoid older cribs that may have loose parts or rough spots that could cause harm to your little one.

Avoid cribs with slats that are too close to each other, since this can cause suffocation. Also, you should look for a crib that does not have decorative cut-outs or drop sides, since these can pose an hazard for your child.

Also, avoid finishes that contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as they can affect your baby's breathing and sleep. Select a crib certified by Greenguard Gold that uses non-toxic materials. Select a crib with a smaller footprints to save space and reduce dust build-up in your nursery.

DaVinci Kalani is an excellent choice for a sturdy crib for babies as it meets most of our requirements. It is easy to clean and doesn't have exposed hardware that can be in the way of toys or clothing. It also looks beautiful in the majority of rooms. The only downside is that it doesn't include an infant rail and it doesn't have as many slat levels like other cribs on this list.

Stork Craft Tuscany is another crib that we highly recommend. It's a bit more expensive than other cribs on this list, but it's sleek and stylish and is a perfect fit for our requirements, including being extremely easy to assemble. It has only three mattress levels that is less than some other cribs. If you plan to use the crib for several years, it may be better suited to your requirements.

2. Easy to Assemble

Many modern mini cribs do not need an entire day of assembly, unlike some larger cribs. They are usually ready to use right from the box, and require only 30 minutes to put together with the included tools. Some even have built-in toddler bed conversion kit which saves you the expense and hassle of buying separate pieces later.

You should always make sure that the crib is well-assembled and that there are no gaps or rough surfaces that could catch a baby. Pay attention to the quality and quantity of the hardware including screws and bolts. Make sure you tighten them up securely but not excessively as this can cause the wood to crack or tear threads. Find a solid wood crib as it is believed to be more secure than metal.

Look for cribs that have easy and clear instructions. Some manufacturers offer a video tutorial that can be helpful for those who may not be accustomed to working with furniture parts. A good manual will include a list of required tools, including screws and washers.

In addition to design, size is another consideration. A crib should be big enough to accommodate your baby, but not so big that it can't be accessed through a standard doorway. Also, be wary of using hand-me-downs because older cribs may not be up to the current safety standards.

The Storkcraft Equinox 3-in-1 is a great choice for those who want an elegant, modern crib. It is made from durable and sustainable New Zealand Pinewood and has three different mattress options. It is more exposed to the elements than some of the other choices on this list, however, some users found it more complicated to assemble than needed due to the mislabeled components and confusing instructions.

3. Convertible

If you're looking for a crib which will last until the age of toddlers and beyond, look into one that can be converted into a daybed or a full-size bed. Consider a convertible crib if would like a crib that will last until toddlerhood. This will help you save money and space and will make it easier to switch out the mattress as your child grows.

While most cribs that transform into a full-size bed seem like an afterthought--you simply remove the side and replace it with a wider rail -- Oeuf has designed a stylish quality crib that can be transformed into a bed frame. It is GREENGUARD Gold-certified, minimal and is a great addition to any nursery. Additionally, you can combine it with a matching trundle bed and dresser to create a more seamless appearance.

This crib is more robust than other cribs in our tests. It could take up more space in your nursery, but it will last for a long time. It's easy to set up and sturdy, even for parents who aren't handy. It also comes with three different mattress heights you can adjust that allows you to start your baby in a low spot that's easy for caregivers to lift and then raise as they get older.

This crib is more of a traditional style than the other two on this list, and is perfect for parents who want an option that looks elegant in a formal nursery. It is also easy to assemble, and comes with a set toddler conversion rails. This eliminates the need to buy rails separately. It does have some exposed metal hardware, which can be an issue for certain people.

4. Eco-Friendly

Eco-friendly cribs offer the best of both worlds, providing an environment that is safe for your child, while also encouraging sustainable environmental practices. They are free of harmful chemicals and emissions that are found in other cribs, and also toxic substances like PVC, phthalate, MDF and lead. Eco-friendly cribs are usually constructed from solid wood or renewable and sustainable materials, and many are minimalist in design to minimize the environmental impact. They are typically simple to put together and change, and some include a changing tray or dresser attached, which can help save space in the nursery.

Certain brands have eco-friendly cribs that can be transformed into a toddler bed or a full-sized bed. They may also have additional features, like an integrated changing table or storage compartments. They must be durable and sturdy to withstand frequent use and clean. The best eco-friendly cribs are constructed from organic, non-toxic materials and come with a low-VOC finish.

Bloom Alma crib is a excellent example of an eco-friendly crib. It is made from sustainable birchwood and has no harmful components or finishes. It is Greenguard Certified and meets all safety standards. It is a great choice for parents looking for a crib with a sleek design that is easy to maintain and also green.

Another option is the Namesake crib, which has an elegant design and top-quality construction for a low cost. The sturdy slats that are constructed of high-quality wood, are Greenguard Gold certified to have low chemical emissions. The crib also has an optional reflux leg that can be attached to the side of the crib to create a gentle slope for babies suffering from reflux.

5. Safety First

Safety should be the first priority when choosing a crib. Make sure that the crib is well-built and sturdy with well-fitting and secured hardware. Also, make sure it meets current CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) guidelines: less than 2.375 inches of space between the slats (that's about the width of a soda container) and no cutouts with decorative designs on the headboard or footboard and corner posts that are flush with end panels or very tall--anything between is the risk of strangulation.

Keep all toys away from the crib, since they pose choking or suffocation risks. Choose nursery cots that is in a clear line of sight so that it doesn't interfere with your view. Also, ensure that any cords are not within your child's reach and are securely connected. Never place pillows, blankets or positioners inside the crib. These items could pose the risk of choking or suffocation and can be kicked off by your child or pushed down by older siblings.

Beware of cribs that are older, as they could have outdated features that can cause injuries. Even if the crib appears in good condition, it could have slats that are not wide or be missing some hardware. Additionally, old cribs may have paint that contains lead or have loose and hazardous screws or bolts.

The Stork Craft Evolur is an excellent value, but might be too expensive for those who prefer a minimalist style. Other options, like the Dream On Me Ashton 4-in-1 or the DaVinci Carter's Colby 4-in-1, sport the same style, but without all the bells and whistles.
