Peru Organic

The production of coffee in Peru is dominated by small farms that cover less than a couple of hectares less, and farmers typically band together into cooperatives to share the cost of equipment and access to markets for their product. The farm from which this coffee is sourced, Cenfrocafe, is located in the provinces of Jaen and San Ignacio in north western Peru near the border with Ecuador. The coop is composed of 2400 farmers who plant coffee on small plots of land ranging from 1300 to 2000 m (4300 to 6500 ft) at the highest elevations of the region. The farmers are meticulous in ensuring that the harvest is picked in the correct time so that they maximize the value of the beans.

Our Peru organic coffee is fully washed, then sun dried to create a unique, deep flavor. The high altitude of farms in this region produce an intense coffee with moderate body, mild citric acidity and an elegant finish.

The women of Peru who cultivate this coffee are part of a movement called Cafe Femenino that is changing the role of women in rural coffee communities. The coffee is cultivated and processed, as well as traded by women, which gives them the opportunity to utilize the additional funds generated from the sale of their product to further their own and their family's well-being. Additionally, a percentage of the money spent on this coffee is donated back to the women who made it. This allows them to expand their business, provide healthcare and education to their children, and support their families. This is an exceptional coffee that has been cultivated using methods handed down from generation to generation.

Peru Arabica

Peru has a wealth of high-quality coffee. Its thin air and high altitudes make it an ideal setting for the cultivation of the crop. The country is the ninth largest producer of coffee, accounting for 2% of world production. It is also a major producer of organic and Fair Trade Coffee.

Originally from Ethiopia, the coffee plant was introduced to Peru by the Spanish after the 16th century. Since then Peru has become a major player on the global coffee market. It is one of the five biggest producers of Arabica.

Small farming families have formed cooperatives throughout the country. This has allowed them to benefit from fair trade prices and sell their beans directly. Small farms are also encouraged to employ ecological methods that help reduce the environmental impact of their coffee production.

Volcafe's cluster program has helped to stabilize the supply chain for roasters by providing a detailed traceability from the field to FOB contract. This allows roasters the ability to make informed decisions and see their entire purchase history. This strategy has been essential to the success of Volcafe’s collaboration with Peruvian farmers.

In the past, numerous farmers have been encouraged to grow coffee to replace coca crops. The government continues to seek ways to replace these illicit crops with coffee that will yield higher profits for the coffee industry. While this is a positive move but it could be an obstacle for the local population, too.

In the end it is essential to provide farmers with the financial support to maintain their livelihoods, and to ensure that their families' health and well-being are not compromised. It is also important to encourage the development innovative products that can increase productivity and improve the quality of the coffee.

The fair trade Peru HB MCM grade 1 is a unique coffee that is grown in the northern region of Cajamarca. This single-origin, medium-roasted coffee is a prime illustration of the unique flavor characteristic of this region. Colombian

The emerald land of Colombia is a place with stunning rainforests, massive mountains, and a superb coffee. The country produces more washed Arabica beans than any other country in the world. Colombian coffees are famous for their mellow yet rich and full-bodied taste and their pleasantly acidic flavor, which is always perfectly balanced and has a hint of sweetness that never tastes cloying or overwhelming.

Colombian coffee is grown traditionally between 1,200 and 2,000 meters above sea level. Here, the top Colombian coffee beans are harvested and grown. The highest quality Colombian beans are generally referred to as Supremo. This refers to the size of the coffee (screen sizes 17 and 18).

After harvesting, the coffee cherries need to be carefully selected by hand to ensure only fresh and fully ripe beans are allowed to continue the process. At this point, the ripe fruit is separated from the beans, which are dried and washed in the sun. The coffee beans that have been washed are then graded and sorted by quality control teams in accordance with size, colour, and density. This assures that only consistent high-quality, high-quality coffee is able to make it onto the shelves of all supermarkets worldwide.

Farmers and workers receive an Fairtrade premium. This is a lump sum added to the price of the sale. They can then invest in their own businesses or community projects. Fair Trade supports small-scale farmers to organize themselves into small producer organizations and cooperatives which allows them to gain access to larger markets.

The money is put into the communities that cultivate coffee. It helps create sustainable development models, and helps protect the environment. It also ensures that working conditions are safe, hours of work are regulated, and there is freedom of association. It also has zero tolerance for child labor and slavery. The money given to farmers allows them to protect their families and invest in their futures. The Ketiara Co-op supports the conservation of Leuser National Park surrounding it by using shade-grown agriculture to preserve the ecosystem.

It's no surprise that in a region famous for its volcanic soil, the fertile ground is perfect for growing coffee. However, this natural resource is being threatened by the influx of foreign coffee growers who have taken over the coffee industry. Many local farmers are forced to leave their farms because they are not able to compete against the prices of these big corporations.

In the absence of direct trade, on average $0.15 of every $3 cup of coffee goes to the farmer. This system must be altered and that's why fair trade is vital. Through the establishment of direct trade relations, farmers can achieve income security that can eliminate drastic changes in market demand from season to season.
