The best robot vacuum can vacuum and mop your floors with no effort. It also leaves clean. Its price is surprisingly low and high-end features (such as dirt detection) are a plus.

Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're in need of it, the mopping pad can be swapped for a wet one in seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

The app lets you modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to similar models.

It did a decent cleaning job on various flooring and rooms with different flooring types including some area rug. Its obstacle detection was excellent and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically empties into its base, and also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba rather than the boxes this mop and robot vacuum is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It has advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some additional cost it's a capable two-in-one that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.


The smart robot uses the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards however this was not 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the home based on how dirty the areas are.

For larger homes, it's worth opting for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or voice controls. auto vacuum is useful if you own a lot furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad that uses an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app offers a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
