Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to let parents sleep close to their babies at night without the risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby will be ready to transition to an actual cot.

MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that you can use throughout the house, as well as the ability to rock manually. It was easy to set up and it came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds vary in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However they are typically intended for children who are the age of three. If you're opting for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes available - standard and large - both of which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot mattress. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's a good option to select the larger one.

Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses' basket but still not too big for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to carry her child into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing, and that the quality is great, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable breathable liner. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means you don't have to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. Height

When selecting a cot for the bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a level that is comfortable for you to feed your the baby. It also needs to be able to be dropped to the ground so that you can pull your baby towards you for night feeds or to soothe. This is especially useful in the event of recovering from C-section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.


Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest point, while others prefer a higher level to give them greater stability. One of our mom testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It has an easy-to-fold side that you can press at the touch a button.

Keep in mind that a bedside or bassinet should only be used until your baby can hold their head up without assistance typically approximately 6 months. This is due to the risk of being suffocated. Be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot, they must take the sides off once they are ready to do so. This will stop them from getting out or falling out of bed.

Design

There are many different styles of cribs for beds, ranging from simple to lavish. The most luxurious models could include features like an integrated night light, a soothing centre which plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or a swivelling base that makes it easier to reach your child for feedings. Some models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, which won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is perfect for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections or who have to remain in bed for extended periods. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier particularly after her c-section.

Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than some of the other cribs that we've looked at, but it folds flat in its travel bag, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home test Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is a fantastic design that is incredibly easy to manoeuvre and it is super-sturdy. Its swivelling base is brilliant as it means you can move the bassinet side to side and one of its sides can be let down to facilitate access especially for mothers who are recovering from their C-sections,' she added.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or their nappies. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from a c-section. Find a model that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without needing to get out of bed. This is especially crucial as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of injury or suffocation, such as duvets and pillowcases, which can cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For bedside crib travel would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that could be converted into different modes like play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add an alternative option to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses that would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using a removable attachment. Attachments can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

bedside cot co sleeper is currently examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
