Car key cutting is much more than just shaping a piece of metal. It is a sophisticated procedure that ensures security, functionality and long-term use of the keys.

Transponder Keys

It is merely a block or carbon that is sized to provide an electrical resistance value.

GM used 15 different resistance values for the VATS pellets and connected them to the blade of the key, so that when the key is turned on in the ignition, a coded signal is transmitted to the module. If the signal matches the resistance value of the transistor in the VATS pellet, the relay in the starter circuit is activated and the engine begins to run. This does not make a car safe from burglary however, it can deter thieves for at least 15 to twenty minutes.

After a prolonged period of usage the VATS module could start to wear out. Each time a key is inserted into the ignition it reroutes two small wires inside the ignition and, over time, the wires may start to break. Once enough wires break the signal to the module is lost and the module won't be able to start the car.

You can solve this issue at home yourself by decoding your VATS code. It's not difficult to determine the resistance of a key with the multimeter. You can determine the resistance value by placing one of the leads on the prongs of metal on both sides of your key.

This is a great method to test a brand new key and check whether it will work in your car. Be sure to remove the key from the ignition before you begin testing it, as the new key could be displaying an incorrect VATS value and may not work in your car.

Smart Key Fobs

Key fobs of today do more than just unlock or start a car. Many of them have advanced features that most owners aren't aware of. They can be employed as a security tool or as a deterrent to theft. They can lock and unlock your door from a distance, make chirping noises to aid in locating your vehicle in a parking lot, or allow you to activate it by pressing the button. This is more functionality than you get from a traditional keychain remote. Smart key fobs are more expensive to replace due their additional functions. They also need to be programmed at the dealer.

Some dealers will charge up to $100 for a single smart fob.
