We consulted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the best one. They evaluated the capacity of storage, layout, energy efficiency, and other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like the name suggests, the GE Profile series targets the consumer who wants to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This refrigerator is packed with features, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a smart water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

This fridge is a great option, despite the slight blip. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Furthermore, it holds a fair amount of frozen food compared to similar models.

The drawers are easy to open and shut, but I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and has numerous options for customization. It will also send notifications when the door is unlocked as well as when the freezer or fridge needs to be defrosted, and when the filter requires a change.

It would be nice it GE PYE22PYNFS could offer Precise Fill, an option that is available in a few GE refrigerators that allow users to set the amount of cups they wish to disperse. The fridge displays a countdown to display how much water is left however it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with an ordinary French door design, and two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set of crisper drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more room. You'll also find a full-width deli drawer and an internal water dispenser.

One of the great features of this refrigerator is that its ice maker is inside the freezer, which makes it easy to transfer frozen ice to the fridge to use as needed. The freezer also features innovative design features like sliding drawers that can help you organize your items. It also has a huge bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items as well as an additional ice storage bin.

Smart InstaView panel is another awesome feature of the refrigerator. You can control the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's a great way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat, but it doesn't necessarily enhance the efficiency of the fridge. In fact, it took longer to defrost and chill food in this fridge as compared to other fridges we test. This could be due to the bigger capacity.

The other issue we have with the door of this refrigerator. They have handles that are sunken on the front, which allow shorter people to easily open them from the bottom, however they're not easy for taller people to pull closed without slamming the doors. It would have been more effective if they had handles mounted on the front.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal option for those looking to combine the benefits of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. Its capacity is superior to counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a little cheaper than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which can make it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good option for those looking for a French-door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a basic design that's not as visually striking as some of the competition however it comes with enough features to make it a solid option. Its most significant feature, the adjustable temperature drawer, helps to keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also has a large water dispenser as well as a good ice machine that works fast.

The "Chill Drawer", which sits over the two crisper bins, is another nice feature. This drawer lets you redirect part of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can keep food items that need extra attention. This feature can be adjusted using a slider located outside the drawer. You can also use this to adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge however, I've found that changing the generic settings tends to be more effective than specific ones.

In my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures were fairly constant across the different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge did not vary significantly from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. This is a solid performance, but doesn't quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also connect this fridge to a smart thermometer for more precise readings of your fridge's internal temperature.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of grey-bodied stainless steel which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It does a great job of repelling fingerprints and streaks even when compared with shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
