To make these revolutionary mobility options more widely accepted by the general public, progressive legislation and supportive policies will be required.

Inequality

In a recent study we examined the impact of SUMPs (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans) in 642 cities in Europe. Our results indicate that SUMPs have a considerable impact on modelled "urban background concentrations" of PM2.5 and NO2, with reductions of these substances ranging from 7% to about 7 percent. However it is important to note that these findings only consider the transport sector's emissions as well as the concentrations in urban areas. In this study, SUMPs are not evaluated for other benefits, such as reduced energy consumption and street level concentrations. Future studies should take into account these and other benefits.
