Mid Bunk Bed

Mid bunk beds are popular for children from pre-teens to teens. They have an elevated sleeping space as well as a space underneath for storage or desks. They are also more adaptable than loft beds, as they can be converted into two separate singles.

Some are designed to look mature, with a shorter ladder and a few steps leading to the bed at the top. They're also extremely durable.

Safety

Despite their popularity bunk beds are typically associated with some dangers, especially for children. Every year, thousands of children are admitted to hospitals for injuries resulting from bunk and loft bed usage - most of which are minor. The most frequent bunk bed accidents happen when kids play on or around their beds, and a significant proportion of these involve falling off the top bunk. There are several ways you can help minimize the chance of this happening and ensure your children's safety at night.

You must first select a bunkbed that meets safety standards. Guardrails should extend at a minimum of 3.5" on both sides of the bed and should be installed to stop children from falling. Ideally, the upper guardrails should be at least 5 inches higher than the mattress foundation to provide additional protection from falls. Similarly, the ladder should be secured and securely fixed to the bunk bed frame. The ladder steps should also be constructed of durable materials with wide, secure treads to prevent sliding. From the beginning, you should teach your children to use bunk beds properly. This includes not playing in or around the bunk beds, laying down only in them and keeping your body and belongings within the fences.

Other steps that can drastically reduce the chance of bunk bed accidents include ensuring the ladder isn't being used as a climbing frame and no belts or ropes are attached to the beds; they could be strangulation hazards. To minimize the chance of hitting ceiling fans or light fixtures when climbing the ladder, keep the ladder from them. You should also periodically inspect the bunk bed to check for signs of wear, particularly any squeaks. These could indicate loose or compromised parts that could compromise the safety or stability of the bed.

Be wary of DIY bunk bed kits, since they might not meet the most recent safety standards. Always consult the manufacturer's guidelines when purchasing a new bunk bed, and inquire about any additional safety features they might provide.

Space

A mid bunk bed is lower than a loft or high sleeper, which means the space underneath can be used to store things or even another bed. This can be a great option for smaller rooms or for children who require extra sleeping or study space.
