How to Choose the Best Cot Bed

The best cot bed is an absolute must-have for every baby. We've created this guide to help you choose the right bed for your baby.

This top-quality option is perfect to be used in Scandi style nurseries. It's a durable and sturdy option that grows with your child. It has three mattress height positions as well as the option of removing the sides for a stylish bench-style toddler bed.

Budget

There's a cot that fits every nursery and budget. There are a variety of options that have different lifespans and some of them can be converted into toddler beds to be used into the age of preschool or beyond. Obviously, the ones which convert into beds tend to be more expensive but the extra investment could be worth it when you're looking for a cot that lasts for a long time instead of just for a few months.

The Mamas & Papas Coxley was our overall winner due to its stunning design and easy-to-assemble design making it a great choice for those who want an extremely high-quality crib that can stand the years. Our testers for parents loved the minimalist design and warm oak finish of this model, which will look amazing in a modern-style Scandi nursery. The cot bed has a drawer that mum tester Katrina thought was more suitable than cheaper cots with an integrated drawer. It also comes with an anti-bite strip on the top rails of the cot, to prevent your child's teeth from getting stuck. But at PS599 with a mattress that is sold separately this crib isn't cheap. It requires an Allen key to start it up.

A more budget-friendly alternative that will still provide your baby a comfy night's sleep is the Elementary cot from John Lewis' Anyday range. The simple design and easy assembly were highly praised by our parents who tested it. The cot is small when folded and can be stored away easily too, fitting into a bag that's the size of the carry case of a camping chair. It's not the best choice for camping in the car but it's perfect for those living in apartments or who won't be moving their cot a lot.

We recommend the SnuzKot for an alternative to a cot that is budget-friendly, particularly if it comes with the toddler kit (sold separately) and mattress extender. It can grow with your child until about four years old, and our dad testers loved the fact that it was able to transform into a minimal-looking toddler bed, and also created a cocoon-like feeling by incorporating a fabric canopy.

Safety

A good cot must not only meet strict UK safety standards, but it must also be sturdy and secure. Choose a sturdy design with safety bars or sides, as well as an erect base that your child can't easily get out. Some cots come with extra features, such as teething rails or drawers for under-bed storage that will help you stay organized while your baby develops.

The Boori cot is constructed of sustainable Australian Araucaria wood and New Zealand Radiata, so you can be sure of the purchase. cot bed sales from a cot to a toddler bed (leaving three sides open to give you reassurance) and comes with an option of an extension kit to take it all the way up to a double bed when your child is ready.

This stylish and simple cot is a great option for those on a tight budget. It's easy to assemble and comes with clearly labeled parts and clear instructions. It comes with three height settings for the mattress so that you can adjust it as your baby grows. It will fit most standard mattress cots and is a great purchase for the price.

This is a fantastic option if you are looking for an expensive cot. It comes with four mattress base positions when in cot mode and will last until your baby is about three years old. It is also foldable and has wheels that lock, making it portable for moving it from one room to the next.

The cot is extremely light at just 6kg, and comes with a handy bag for traveling. It is also very robust, with an extremely sturdy frame that can stand up to the demands of boisterous toddlers. The instructions were well written and clear, but our testers found the assembly to be a bit difficult. The slats were spaced sufficiently apart to prevent fingers from getting stuck between them. It is also more expensive than other cots that we have reviewed but the durability and function make it worth the investment.

Design

When purchasing a cot bed it's easy to get caught up in the specs and safety features, but don't neglect the style. It is essential to choose the cot bed that is both functional and beautiful.

The icklebubba Classic Cot bed is the ideal cot for design lovers. Its sleek, modern version of the traditional sleigh style isn't as bulky that these types of cots can provide. It also offers storage space, and comes with a pull-out drawer that fits under the cot, plus teething rails that can be attached to the side. Our mum tester found it robust and durable, with the ability to adjust the height of the base three times, which allows the bed to expand with your child.

If you prefer you can choose the Modena cot bed from Tutti Bambini offers excellent value for money. It also has a stylish panel design that would suit any nursery. It's designed to last until your child is six years old, and then it transforms first into a junior bed, and then into a stylish sofa bed. It's also one of the only cot beds we've tested with draw with a hanging rail as well as teething rails, while its solid pine construction makes it an excellent choice for parents who want their cot to last for a long time.

The Stokke Sleepie Cot Bed is another option that has panels. It comes in a variety of colors to complement your nursery's decor. Our mom testers loved its unique features including the drawer for storage being particularly useful to store bedding and clothes. It's also one of the easiest cot beds to put together, with all the pieces clearly labeled and easy to understand instructions. It's also a great option for those with limited space as it can be rolled up and rolled down. It is made of a standard cot-mattress (140cm by 70cm), and is suitable for children from birth to toddlerhood. An extension kit allows it to be used up to 10 years old.

Convertibility

There are a lot of baby essentials that you should consider as you become a new parent. But one of the most important is a quality cot bed. You want something that will last as long as possible and grow with your child to provide them a secure and comfortable place to sleep.

Although most cots can be transformed into toddler beds by the purchase of a conversion kit some cot beds are designed to go beyond this. Our top choice is the Boori Eton Convertible Bed, which converts into a toddler bed (L207cm x W147cm x H90cm) and a sofa and daybed (L234cm x W145cm x H70cm). This makes it the longest-lasting selection on our list, as it will last your child through the years from birth until childhood.

It's a little more expensive than the other cot-beds we tested however, its high-end appearance and feel can be found in any nursery. Our parents were amazed by how easy it was to put together and construct but they did say that the instructions could be clearer. This isn't a major issue but it was still a simple task and took less than 30 minutes to complete.

Another impressive aspect of this cot is that it comes with four mattress heights for the base, which is an upgrade on the three most popular options. This gives you the flexibility to adjust it as your child grows as they may need a higher or lower base level, based on their age and level. It also comes with useful teething rails and a plastic strip on the top to shield it from biting.

This cot is available in several different Scandi-inspired finishes, and our dad tester was particularly keen on the grey finish. It's not cheap, but it does offer an excellent value for money, as it will take your child through to toddlerhood and beyond. It also comes with an one-year guarantee, so you have peace of mind that it will be sturdy and long-lasting. The only thing you'll need to purchase separately is a mattress that's not included.
