They generally provide the most efficient cooking method than traditional wall ovens since they consume less energy. Additionally, they can usually be used to cook warm and hot dishes, eliminating the necessity for additional appliances, such as toasters or warming plates.

When evaluating possible amendments to energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses that include assessment of technology and market conditions, screening analysis, engineering analysis, and national impacts analysis (NIA). In this SNOPR, DOE will use its engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the level of efficiency improvements are feasible for this product type.

DOE will assess the design of a microwave to an energy performance objective that is specified in the engineering analysis. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of NIA, DOE will assess the effects on consumers, including the lifecycle cost savings, and simple payback time (PBP). DOE will employ its Government Regulatory Impact Model with an adaptation for microwave ovens to calculate industry net present value ("NPV").

Manufacturer impacts will be evaluated also and DOE will use a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model, which has been adapted to this particular product type to estimate manufacturing NPV. DOE will also look at the impacts of these plans on small businesses as well as other manufacturing subgroups to determine those who are likely to be affected.

DOE will also look into whether the test procedure for microwave ovens has to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption as well as an energy use measure. Currently, test procedures only provide standby mode power usage.

Design

Wall ovens depend on the circulating of hot air while microwaves rely on waves to cause water molecules in food to vibrate and generate heat. Combination wall units combine these two appliances into one unit, reducing space in the kitchen and giving a modern, sleek look. However, it is important to think about your needs and budget before investing in a combo wall oven. Some of the ovens we evaluated have performance or design issues.
