Types of Hobs

A hob, which is also known as stovetops in North America, is a cooking appliance that heats pans with electric power or flames. There are several different types of hobs, so you can pick one that fits your style and kitchen.

Induction hobs feature a flat ceramic cooking surface and come with five or four zones to heat your pans. The contemporary designs that operate with a touch are elegant and chic and are easy to clean.

Ceramic hobs

Ceramic hobs can give your kitchen a modern and sleek appearance. The flat glass-ceramic surfaces can be easy to clean and can quickly be cleaned up in the event of spills or splatters. They are quick to heat up and are energy efficient and can lower your electric bill. However, one drawback of ceramic hobs is that they may be slow to change temperature settings which can be a problem when cooking food that requires a quick reduction or increase in heat.

Electric hobs use a solid plate that is heated by electric elements underneath. The power of each element can be individually adjusted by the rotary knobs. You can utilize the Boost feature to increase the temperature of a specific area. Ceramic hobs also have a very high heat retention, so they'll remain hot to the touch after being shut off. It is essential to place ceramic hobs in an area that is safe from items that could ignite and out of reach of children.

The benefit of this type of hob is that it can be installed on a variety of worktops, such as laminate and solid wood as well as granite. It's also fairly affordable and is a great option for those trying to replace your old hobs without spending too much money. However, just like any other appliance, they need to be properly installed and connected to the mains, so we recommend hiring an electrician professional to ensure that your new hobs are safe to use.

The downside to this kind of hob is that it's extremely sensitive to the size of the pan and shape. You'll need to buy cookware that either is exactly the same as the element or is able to fit comfortably into each of the heating zones. If the cookware isn't compatible the element, it won't recognize it and won't begin to heat up the bottom of the pan. This could lead to inconsistent results in cooking and makes the stove less efficient.

Gas on glass hobs

Glass hobs with gas are sleek and contemporary in appearance. They are more expensive than electric models, and require professional installation. However they heat up faster and an entire pot of water can often boil in less than four minutes. This type of hob is also a good choice for cooks who like to regulate the amount of heat generated. However, it must be observed that a glass-based hob is more susceptible to damage than stainless steel ones and will likely need to be cleaned more often, since the build-up of grease and residue tends to stay on the surface rather than slide off.

A great example of a gas on glass model is this Bertazzoni hob, which boasts four matt black monobloc burners with accurate metal control knobs to create a stylish and sophisticated finish. It also includes an oblong wok ring with 4kW for additional versatility, as well as pan supports that are dishwasher-safe, making them easy to clean.

Another highly recommended model is this Bosch gas hob, which is a stylish slab of toughened glass with advanced cooking technology. The dual ring design on the left of the gas hob features a double inner burner to increase the distribution of heat and increase the speed of cooking. It also comes with an indicator for power that allows you to regulate the precise temperature of the flame. You can select from nine preset settings, such as a high setting to sear steaks and a lower one for scrambled egg.

Our test subjects also appreciated the controls, as they were simple and intuitive. Some minor drawbacks are that you need to press the controls nine more times to reach the maximum temperature and the glass can make it difficult to discern the burners' actions.

A few of the top gas-on-glass hobs are available for an affordable price, such as this Neff model. Although it's unlikely to win any design awards, it does the job well and is a fantastic addition to your kitchen for just over PS120.

Electric hobs

Electric hobs are ideal for modern homes. best hobs uk do they offer a sleek design that fits into the rest of your kitchen as well, but they also offer modern technology that is safer, more efficient and energy-efficient than their predecessors.

Ceramic glass hobs are among the most sought-after electric stoves. They're made with a sleek, glazed finish and feature an easy-to-clean surface that is resistant to smudges or scratches. They're also typically equipped with a power boost feature which lets you increase the heat of your cooker for a short period of time.

Another electric hob that is perfect for modern homes is an induction hob. In contrast to traditional electric and gas plate hobs, induction hobs utilize electromagnetic fields to directly heat cookware. This means they are more energy-efficient and have precise temperature control. However, they require a specific type of pan to work with them and can be expensive to set up.

A gas-on-glass hob is a different option that's a great choice for modern homes. It features a burner beneath the glass, which is flat, similar to a standard gas stove. The glass is heatproof and shatterproof, making it easier to clean than tempering glass. Many of these hobs also include a 'hot-surface indicator', which alerts you when the hob is hot.

While gas hobs remain a popular option for many home cooks but they can be noisy and difficult to clean. The flame can be difficult to control and take some time to warm up and cool down. Electric hobs, on the other side are more efficient in energy use and are easier to clean.

For the ultimate in modern efficiency, you can even find electric stoves that are compatible with LPG gas. This allows you to switch between various fuel sources, so you'll be able to adapt to your lifestyle. It is important to note that these hobs require installation by an approved gas safe engineer. They also require a dedicated cable of 6mm in your kitchen. They are also not suitable for people with pacemakers as the electromagnetic field can cause interference with them.

Hobs with induction

Copper coils conduct an alternating electric current under the glass surface of an induction hob. When an induction compatible pan is placed on the hob, the coils generate magnetic fields which directly heat the pan rather than heating a surface of the worktop or a heated plate. Induction hobs are extremely efficient in energy use, since they don't squander heat.

There are a myriad of models of induction stoves, starting with the basic models with a single zone identified by rings, to more advanced multi-zoned induction stoves that have up to six zones and allow multiple pots to be cooked simultaneously on one flex area. Some of these premium models feature a slider control that is similar to the iPhone. Simply swipe your finger across the power bar located in the middle to choose the desired temperature left to right increases the heat and right to left decreases it. Some models have pre-programmed settings for specific recipes or food types which can save you time and effort in the kitchen.

Induction hobs are more expensive than ceramic hobs. However they are more energy efficient in the long run. They are more efficient in heating and have a smaller heating area which could reduce your energy bills. They cool faster and also are safer than traditional hobs that do not have hot plates. This makes them ideal for families with children or elderly people. However, they do create an electric force that could affect certain medical devices, such as pacemakers. It is therefore crucial to center the pans and avoid using smaller pans with larger burners.

As with all electric hobs, you'll need to keep your induction hob clean because food and debris could accumulate over time. You can use a standard oven cleaner, or purchase a specialist cleaner to keep your hob shiny and in good condition for a longer time. Avoid using the abrasive cleaning products or the scratching pads on your induction stove, as they can scratch the surface.
