ADHD Treatments For Adults

Adults can benefit from the same treatments as children. These include medicine and counseling (psychotherapy) and life skills training. These treatments can include a combination.

treatment of adhd in adults increase brain chemicals that regulate self-regulation and attention. These include the methylphenidate (marketed as Ritalin, Concerta) and stimulants belonging to the amphetamine group, such as the amphetamine lisdexamphetamine (marketed as Adderall, Vyvanse).

Stimulant Medications

Stimulants increase the body's energy and can cause increased mental alertness and physical activity. They include legal substances such as caffeine (added to tea and coffee) and nicotine, as well as prescription medications used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), narcolepsy and hyperactivity. In large doses, stimulants may create over-stimulation, which can cause anxiety and heart palpitations, as well as high blood pressure as well as paranoia and aggression. For some long-term usage of stimulants can harm the functioning of the brain's dopamine system and reduce pleasure feelings. The stimulants are available in liquids, patches or pills. Methamphetamines, cocaine, and amphetamines are stimulants that can be purchased illegally and used to abuse.

They are also known as central nervous system stimulants. They work by boosting certain brain chemicals which improve concentration, reduce tiredness and increase alertness. They are the first line treatment for adults with ADD or ADHD. The medications are available in the form of a morning-only formulation or longer-acting formulations that are active throughout the day, like the methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine.

The health care team may also recommend psychosocial interventions such as psychotherapy or educational. It is important to monitor the effectiveness of medicines over time. This is a difficult task.

Non-stimulant Medications

Around 15%-30 percent of children do not respond to stimulant medications and this is probably true for adults too. The non-stimulant medications take longer time to kick in and can take up to several weeks to feel any effects. But, they don't come with the same risk of side effects as stimulants and can be a better option if you can't tolerate the effects of stimulants or are worried about addiction.
