Pragmatics and Semantics Many contemporary philosophical approaches are based on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective). Others take a more comprehensive view of pragmatics, like relevance theory, which aims to explore the understanding of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a listener. This view tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatics, for instance, epistemic discussions about truth. What is pragmatism? Pragmatism is a viable alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was developed by Charles Sanders Peirce, and extended by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It had a profound influence on the areas of inquiry ranging from theology of philosophy to philosophy of science but also ethics as well as philosophy of politics and language. Pragmatists also developed a variety of theories and methods that include semiotics and philosophy of language. They also have explored areas such as philosophy of religion, philosophy, science, ethics and theology. Some, like Peirce or Royce, are epistemological relativism, while others contend that this kind of relativism is misguided. The late 20th century saw the resurgence of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a number new developments. They include a "near-side" pragmatics which is focused on the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives and anaphors. There is also an "far-side" pragmatics which looks at the semantics in discourses. What is the connection between what you say and what you do? Semantics and Pragmatics can be viewed as being at opposite ends of the continuum. On the close side, semantics is viewed and pragmatics is situated on the other side. Carston for instance, claims that modern pragmatics follows at least three main lines: those who view it as a philosophy in the vein of Grice and those who concentrate on its interaction with grammar, and those who are concerned with the meaning of utterances. Near-side pragmatics is believed encompass issues such as the resolution of ambiguity and vagueness, reference to proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphors, as well as presupposition. Their works are still widely read today. Although pragmatism can be considered an alternative to the traditional philosophical traditions of continental and analytic, it is not without its critics. For example some philosophers have claimed that pragmatism is just an expression of deconstructionism, and is not really a new philosophical approach. In addition to these criticisms, pragmatism has been questioned by scientific and technological developments. For example, pragmatists have struggled to reconcile their opinions on science with the development of evolutionary theory, which was created by a non-pragmatist Richard Dawkins. Despite these challenges the pragmatism movement continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is a crucial third option in comparison to the continental and analytic philosophical traditions and has numerous practical applications. It is a growing field of inquiry and has many schools of thought developing and incorporating elements of pragmatism into their own philosophy.
