3 Wheel Buggies

3 wheel buggies provide excellent maneuverability with a stylish and slim frame. Many of these feature seats made of fabric that have a cosy lie flat bed and perfect weight distribution, ideal for babies from birth.

The wheels are bigger, and they also often have suspensions for smooth movement on different terrains. The only downside to these wheels is that they tend to be bulkier and heavier to transport and store.

Stability

Three-wheel buggies have a lot of stability. They don't fall over more easily when driving straight. You can also manoeuvre more swiftly. However, if you attempt to stop or turn suddenly they'll lose stability and could tip over. Some manufacturers add an extra wheel to their 3-wheel buggy designs to improve the stability of the chassis.

The extra wheel also helps you navigate off-road terrain. Look for models that have air-filled tyres (also known as pneumatic tyres) because they can deal with off-road trails and other surfaces including rocks, sand, and mud. These models also come with a lockable wheel on the front to increase the stability of the vehicle over rough terrain.

With the correct geometry, engineering and weight distribution, these buggies can turn on a dime easy to steer with one hand; feature 360o front swivel wheel that allows agility and mobility to be effortless and light in handling. They will also pass the same stability standards globally and test as 4-wheel buggies.

If you are in the market for a fabric seat they are typically lower in the frame compared to modular seats. This means that your baby's centre of gravity will be closer to the ground, instantly ensuring a smoother ride.

Maxi-Cosi is a household name for its car seat range however, it has recently expanded its product range with the Citylife compact travel system and pushchair. The 3-in-1 model was designed for urban living and can be used for newborns with a carrycot or infant car seat. It has 4 wheels and has an exclusive black pewter frame that the manufacturer claims is 'slim and compact'. It's only 2cm wider than the Babyzen Yoyo.

Folding

There are many 3 wheel buggies that can be folded in a compact way to can be tucked away in smaller spaces. Many of these buggies can be folded with one hand and are easy to clean. The smallest models will have an easy height adjustment for the handlebar, whereas others may feature an adjustable suspension and an expandable 50+ UV canopy. Some models could have an enormous basket as well as a brake lever that is quick-release.

The most efficient 3 wheel buggy to tackle rough terrain

A 3-wheeler is likely to be more able to deal with off-road terrain than a 4-wheel model, although both models can get stuck in tight places. A model with larger front and rear wheels will aid. This will make them easier to push across rough terrain and will often help with getting up and down high kerbs.

The brand new Roma Atlas has been praised by many for its remarkable agility despite its three-wheeled design. MFM reviewer Kath tried it out with her infant and reported that "it was very well-handled on cobbles, bumpy surfaces dirt roads, gravel tracks and even a few hills."

Another alternative is the newest all-terrain 3 wheel buggy made by car seat brand Maxi-Cosi named Stella. It's suitable from birth when used in conjunction with the carrycot. It's a slightly larger than the lighter 4wheelers (with a surprisingly slim frame of 54cm wide) but has big air-filled tyres, three recline positions, and a swift one-hand fold.

Its most appealing feature is its modularity. It's compatible across all the brand's baby strollers and car seats. You can design your own travel system, whether you're looking to go for a shorter walk or take a longer stroll, by using the chassis.

Tyres

The tyres on 3 wheel buggies come in a variety of designs and materials, and each has its pros and cons. For instance, tyres that are filled with air provide a smooth performance and a smooth ride, whereas foam-filled tyres are more durable. The type you pick will be based on your personal preferences and the location you live in.

For instance, if you plan to travel often on unpaved paths or rough terrain, you may want to consider an all-wheeler with more durable tyres. Think about the type of suspension you require. A sturdy suspension is helpful to handle bumps and humps. However, it can be heavy and contribute to the overall weight of your pushchair.

The size of the tyre is also important. Knowing how to read tyre sizing is crucial to ensure safety, performance, and durability. The combination of numbers and letters on the sidewalls of tyres may be confusing initially, but decoding it will allow you to comprehend the tyre's dimensions. For instance, a tyre's size of '185/70 R14' means that the tire is a 185/70 radial with a 14-inch rim diameter.

In addition to being more durable, PU tires are lighter and more puncture resistant than rubber ones. If you're not sure if the pushchair you are using has rubber or PU tires, you can test sliding the tires over a smooth surface and tie them. If they slide easily, then the tires are made of PU. If not, then they are made of rubber.

Suspension

The suspension of a three-wheel buggy will make it more comfortable for your child because it will absorb any knocks or bumps that occur from rough terrain. A large wheel that are air-filled, and can be locked for stability during jogging is essential to ensure that your buggy will be capable of navigating off road surfaces easily.

There are many choices for buggy designs to fit every budget and lifestyle. For instance, the Mountain Buggy pioneered all terrain agility in a 3-wheel buggies. With the perfect geometry and engineering, their fabrics sling seat sits snug inside the frame as opposed to on top like modular seats, resulting in a lower centre of gravity and sitting at the ideal height for the best weight distribution that allows it to easily handle kerb pops.

Another option worth considering is the Urban Glide 2 from Thule that has a sleek design with a large, highly maneuverable front wheel, excellent suspension and an easy-to-use handbrake that twists. MFM reviewer Kath took this buggy to the test by taking it for an excursion through the rough terrain and she was impressed with how it handled the terrain really well. She said that it 'flies effortlessly over bumpy grass, cobbles, pavements, dirt tracks and even makes light work of getting up and down the kerbs'.

The Roma Atlas is another popular off road option and similar to the Urban Glide 2, comes in a variety of colors to match your style. It also has an adjustable handlebar, a spacious basket and an ultraviolet hood that is 50+. You can also choose from a selection of infant car seats that transform the buggy into pram. This includes the elegantly designed Carrycot Plus(tm), which is a comfy lie-flat baby bed suitable for infants and newborns up to 12 month old.

Safety

Four wheels make the buggy more stable and less likely to tip over and is easier to maneuver. It is also more secure for your child as their weight is distributed more evenly throughout the frame of the pushchair.

A four-wheel buggy also tends to have a lower center of gravity and is therefore more easy to roll up and over curbs. The fabric sling seat sits inside the frame rather than over it as modular seats. This creates a low seating position and a lighter buggy that is easily manoeuvred.

If you're looking to go for an exercise with your child then a four-wheeler is better suited since it has a suspension system that allows the front wheel to move independently of the back wheel to allow you to tackle bumpy roads and rough terrain - just bear in mind not all 4 wheel buggies are suitable for running (most are NOT, such as the Phil and Teds). Mountain Buggies are the exception, as they have an exclusive suspension system that has been independently tested across all types of terrain.
