Replacement Handles For Windows

Double-glazed windows are a popular feature. As time passes, they could be worn out or rusty.

To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the length of the spindle of the handle you are replacing and also the fixings. This can be done by examining the base of the handle that was previously used.

Handle

Over time, uPVC handles and window locks are susceptible to damage due to wear and tear, or accidental or deliberate damage. This can mean that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close, or it isn't locked at all. It's tempting to replace the entire window unit if this occurs, but it's not always required. In many instances an upgrade to the handle or lock is all that's needed.

The espagnolette design is the most common uPVC window handle. The handle is equipped with an external spindle that is protruding out of the handle. It fits into a gearbox, which controls the multipoint locking system within the window. When replacing a uPVC window handle it is a good idea to use screw cover caps in order to secure the screws and shield them from corrosion. Alternately, you can make use of a spacer or washer to create a more secure seal. Having a screw cap on the handle will also keep debris and water from entering the handle and damaging the handle.

After you have removed the handle from the window, it's recommended to clean both the spindle as well as the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions properly and will also keep dirt out of the multipoint lock.

Squeaky hinges may indicate that the hinges need to be replaced. This is usually due to metal hitting metal. If the noise is still present then a small amount of lubricant can help.

Window plumbs help avoid unnecessary binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is line with the frame, which ensures that it can be closed and opened properly. If a window is not plumb, it could have issues opening and closing or become warped with time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

You can purchase replacement windows hinges made of upvc that are available in imperial or metric measurements. In general, the metric sizes are a little more precise, however this isn't really evident once they are installed. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, replacing any screws that were damaged or bent, then put the casement cover back over the mechanism.
