What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Contrary to older keys car keys have chips in them that are specific to each vehicle. This keeps thieves from taking the key and putting it in the car.

Keys can be purchased from a dealership or cloned in a locksmith's shop. The procedure for programming the key varies by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the off position without starting the engine, and then removing it within a certain time frame.

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, a transponder sends out an encoded signal with the four-digit code when it is questioned by air traffic control. The signal is referred to as the SQUAWK code and is the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It also serves to send specific messages to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak to the radio. They are crucial to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar queries with an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate an aircraft in a crowd of screens. Transponders come in a variety of modes that vary how they respond to interrogation. Mode A transmits only the code, while mode C includes information about altitude. Mode S transponders send more detailed information like callsigns and position. This can be useful when flying in airspace with a lot of people.


Most aircraft have a small beige-colored box beneath the seat of the pilot. This is the transponder and it is set up to transmit a SQUAWK code when the aircraft is activated by air traffic control. The transponder may be set to the 'ON, and 'ALT' or SBY (standby position) positions.

Air traffic control will typically instruct a pilot to "squawk the ident". This is a directive for pilots to press their transponder's IDENT button. The ident button causes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens which allows them to identify your aircraft on the screen.

To ensure security it is recommended that PINs are at least 6 digits long and contain both numbers and letters. Some OEMs also require PIN codes for the aftermarket key programmer to ensure security, to prevent non-authorized persons from harvesting data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify cars and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for each vehicle on earth and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits that make up the VIN code are made up of an array of numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal vital details about your car or truck.

Modern automobiles are digital libraries that offer a wealth of information about their history and specifications. A VIN number is the key to unlock this data, allowing you to discover everything from whether your car has been in a recall to the number of times it's had owners change.

A VIN number is made up of various sections, each with specific information. The first digit, as an example indicates the kind of vehicle it is, such as the passenger car, pickup truck, or SUV. The second digit is the manufacturer. The third digit represents the division of assembly for the car. The fourth through eighth digits represent the model type, restraint systems type and body type, as well as the codes for transmission and engine. Then, the whole VIN is transformed back into its original form by multiplying the weight of each digit by 11. If the result is similar to the check digit, then the VIN is valid.

Data Transfer

Data transfer is the act of moving data from one location to another. The information can be sent in a variety of ways including digital signals and traditional paper documents. Data transfers may also take place between different computer programs, which are often called software packages. A successful data transfer requires careful planning and consideration of the limitations of each program. It may be necessary to change the data.

A key programmer tool typically allows a technician, or an average person to program a new transponder for their vehicle. Connecting the tool to the OBD II connector on the vehicle and then using it to retrieve the programming data is a simple procedure. The tool will then change the transponder to match the code stored in the program which will allow the key to start and operate the vehicle.

During data transfer the errors will be stored into an error stack. The stack can be retrieved for troubleshooting later. You can also set the process of data transfer to automatically restart load processes that fail for the specified amount of times. This error storage could be useful if you want to keep track of a specific target application and avoid losing data records if they are not successfully loaded.
