How to Choose the Best Cot For Newborns

A cot is the infant's first bed, and will be their sleep space until they reach the age of four years old. Therefore, you want it to be comfortable solid and secure.

Check that the mattress is free of any gaps, as they could pose an entrapment risk for infants. Also consider a convertible cot.

Single Cot

The OEX Ultralite folding cot is one of the lightest options on market. It weighs 2.68kg and is almost a quarter of the price of the Helinox version I tested. It's also a lot easier to set up. The two main poles snap together like abnormally burly tent poles, with shock cord to keep them in order and slide into sleeves that fit on their legs. All you have to do is to place your feet inside them to set up the sleeping surface.

The only negative is that it can be a little tricky to dismantle it - you have to be extremely strong to remove the legs, and then it requires some effort to remove the frame itself. It's not a major issue and I believe it's the best lightweight cot I've ever tried.

Look at the cot bed options available on the market if looking for something more durable and long-lasting. They're usually suitable from birth to around 2 years old, so you'll need a single bed for your child at some time if you choose this option.

Some children are happy to remain in a cot for more than this, but most want to move on to their first single bed - which could be presented as a "prize' for being a big sister or brother!

The Cot One provides a comfortable sleep for infants and small children on any surface, including hard surfaces. It's also easy to set up, with no small parts that can be lost, and it's safe enough to be held by a toddler without having any wobbly bits to worry about.

Double Cot

A double cot is ideal for twins or siblings who need to sleep together. It offers the same safety features as a single cot including side rails and an slatted base that can be lowered as your child grows. It also comes with multiple support areas, which means you can choose the ideal size for your child's unique needs. In addition, this is the only cot we test that can accommodate multiple infants at once and can accommodate two babies as big as 325 lb. and 72 inches long. This is a fantastic selling point for families that will need to share space.

One of the things that parents adore about this cot is that it can be converted into a toddler bed and then onto an adult bed, giving it a longer life span and meaning that you won't have to buy another bed. This is ideal for families with limited budgets and will save money as your child grows.

The majority of health professionals recommend cot beds since they offer the highest level of safety for your child. The crib is designed to be used until your child is two years old. After that, it will need to be converted to a toddler or junior bed.

This is the only cot we have tested that has an adjustable base. The lowest setting is ideal for babies who are in a sitting position. The highest setting is suggested when your baby is able to roll over. This is a vital aspect as babies can choke when their heads are caught between gaps or protrusions inside the cot.

The only issue with this cot is that it's not the most transportable, since it requires a large amount of effort to fold, and can be quite finicky when you try to put the legs in a proper position. It is also the largest cot in our list, and can be heavy to carry when you have to move it from the storage location.

This deluxe wood cot is the perfect option if you're looking for a cot with all the features. It's a stunning piece of furniture that enhances design, comfort and utility in your living room. It looks beautiful in any nursery, and can be incorporated into a variety of different designs for kids' bedrooms when your child is out of it.

Triple Cot

Cots provide the safety and security of a sleeping environment for your newborn and ensure that they get the rest they need. They are usually smaller than beds and the base is adjustable depending on your baby's developmental stage. Many cots come with drop-sides that allow you to sleep in a safe environment with your baby. It also allows you to feed your baby at the night. Some cots also have the option to remove one of the sides completely. This could allow you to use it as a bassinet, and create a safer alternative to sleeping in your bed.

Some cots have additional features that simplify the lives of parents. These include an under-bed drawer which is ideal for storage, rails that safeguard babies who are teething, and a riser leg which can create an angle that is suitable to help reflux babies. Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed is one of our favourites. It's not just elegant with its minimalist Scandi design and oak finish, but also very practical, with three different height settings for the mattress.

It's important that your baby gets a good night's sleep. So, it is worth your time to find the ideal cradle or cot for your child. Take part in an NCT New Baby Course to discover more about the various options available and discuss these with other parents as well as an experienced group leader.

When you are buying a cot, there are a lot of things to take into consideration. This includes the dimensions of the cot's sides and depth and storage capacity, if it has a removable hood, and if it comes with bedding. Make sure you check the dimensions of the crib or cot for your baby to make sure it is suitable for your nursery or bedroom. Make sure there is enough room to move around and that it's not too close to windows or sources of heat.

Best cot for newborn

If you are expecting twins or triplets, you'll need a quadruple cot. These large cots are designed to accommodate four babies at once They also include bedding sets that make it easy to get your little ones ready to go to bed. Some also have an end rail that can be removed, which allows you to put your child close to you while they rest. If you have kids of your own You may prefer a model with a bunk bed that can be turned into a single bed.

Many cots have an adjustable mattress that can be adjusted to meet your baby's height. This is a great solution for parents who are concerned that your baby might fall down in the night. It's an excellent idea when your child begins to stand up. Many cot mattresses are made of natural materials such as cotton or wool, but there are models that use polyurethane foam as well.

It is a good idea to select a cot that has mesh sides. This will allow air to circulate and help keep your baby cool. Check the bars as well. They should not be larger than 6.5cm to stop your child from climbing out. Avoid cots that have solid foot and head boards as they can entrap clothing or legs.

Another important consideration is how easy the cot is to clean. Find out if it can be washed in the machine and what the instructions for cleaning are for the fabric and any parts that are removable. You'll also want to check whether your bedding for your cot fits, or if you'll need to purchase a specific travel cot sheets.

Nappy costs can quickly increase! Bedding, clothes and toys. A cot with storage space, like the Obaby Stamford Space Saver Cot will allow you to keep everything neatly organised and easily accessible.
