The Benefits and Drawbacks of a 3 Wheeled Pushchair

If you often walk across rough terrain, or wish to exercise in a pushchair with three wheels, it's the best option. They are a great option if need a buggy that can take on any terrain, from busy high streets to woodland tracks.

To make your ride more maneuverable, look for a model that has locking or swivelling front wheels. The rear and front wheels that are larger provide a more comfortable ride on different surfaces.

Manoeuvrability

Manoeuvrability is a key benefits of a 3 wheel pushchair. The wheels are close and allow the chassis to turn and twist more easily than a 4 wheel pushchair. This makes them ideal for busy streets and shops. Some models have smaller front wheels that can be swivelled and locked for extra maneuverability. The Roma Atlas has two wheels at the front, which are placed close together, and a smart lock that allows it to be as stable as a three-wheeler, while maintaining the same maneuverability.

Many of our most loved 3 wheelers can be transformed from pram, stroller, car-seat and toddler seats as your child grows. This is a great option when you're planning to travel with your family or taking frequent trips to the shops. The Baby Jogger Nipper is a excellent illustration. It has Hauck XL airwheels with a 360-degree locking swivel wheel, and a suspension that lets it be used on all terrains.

Another great option is the ickle Bubba Nipper, a pushchair that is all-terrain with great suspension and large puncture proof tyres that allow it to be used for off-roading and smooth city pavements. It's suitable for use from birth (in the reversible seat unit or with a carrycot that is compatible) and has a handy one-handed instant fold for boot storage and airport travel.

Choosing the right wheels for your pushchair is essential depending on where you'll use it the most. Moulded wheels are great for the city, but not so on more rugged terrain. If you intend to take your pushchair off pavements you should choose tyres that are filled with air, sometimes known as pneumatic tyres that are capable of coping with rough terrain.

If you're in search of a pushchair that can be used in both rural and urban environments, then take a look at our top-rated Bugaboo Fox 5 All Terrain pushchair. It's got all the great suspension and large wheels of an all-terrain model, but it's also a brilliant urban pushchair, with a lightweight frame, a lockable front wheel, and a one-handed fold.

Stability

You can increase the stability of your buggy by looking for specific features. Certain models have a swiveling front wheel that can be locked to provide additional stability when driving on rough terrain. This can be especially useful for those who will be using your pushchair off-road or running as it gives you the confidence to go off on different surfaces easily.

Another good stability feature is suspension. It makes your buggy more comfortable to ride in for both the baby and you, especially on uneven ground. Some brands offer the option to change the tyres on their pushchairs so that they can be adapted to the terrain you will be using it on.

Consider purchasing a 3-wheeled pushchair with tires that are filled with air for a pushchair that is able to handle any terrain. These wheels will provide a smoother ride on bumps, and are less likely to puncture than solid wheels. They also allow you to ride on tracks that are not paved and will transport your buggy over different surfaces like dirt, grass, sand and mud.

All-terrain pushchairs tend to be a little wider than standard pushchairs however there are a few fantastic options that don't compromise stability or manoeuvrability. One of our favorites is the UPPAbaby Ridge is equipped with many remarkable features that make it suitable for off-road use as well as jogging after your child reaches a certain age. These include large, foam-filled tyres that are never flat with adjustable suspension, as well as an easy one-handed fold.

Another great all-terrain pushchair is the Bugaboo Fox 5 - this features the same all-terrain capabilities as the UPPAbaby Ridge. It has an excellent suspension, large puncture-proof tyres and the ability to fold with one hand. It's also compatible with a large range of car seats and can be used as a carrycot or infant carrier too. It's heavier than other 3-wheelers. However, it's still a great option for parents who wish to have their pushchair equipped to travel in any terrain.

Weight

The downside of 3 wheeled pushchairs is that they can be heavy, particularly when dealing with bumpy surfaces and kerbs. The larger rear wheels on a 3-wheeler contribute to a heavier overall weight than 4 wheelers which means you may need more strength to lift them, particularly when folding.

All-terrain models are an excellent option for those who want an infant stroller that can handle rough terrain or rough tarmac. These usually have special features, like robust suspensions and large puncture-proof tyres. Brands are increasingly designing all-terrain strollers equipped with tyres which are filled with foam or gel to prevent them from falling flat.

UPPAbaby's Ridge all-terrain pushchair offers an array of child-friendly features that will help it navigate a variety of terrain easily. The Ridge all-terrain pushchair comes with many parent-friendly features, including the ability to lock the front wheel, a simple fold with one hand, a large basket, and a movable handlebar. MFM reviewer Becky said that the Ridge is "very good for woodland walks and gravel roads, as well as market town cobbles".

iCandy is another brand that offers a selection of all terrain pushchairs. Their latest all-terrain model the Core, is suitable from birth and can be used with a carrycot as well as car seat adaptors. The iCandy Core has a host of features that make it an excellent all-terrain pushchair, including large, foam-filled never-flat tyres and a fantastic suspension system. The Core is heavier than other all-terrain strollers however it is light enough to maneuver on more rough terrain.

Folding

3 wheel buggy -terrain models are an excellent option for those who want a pushchair to handle rough terrain. This kind of pushchair comes with large wheels both on the front and rear to help it navigate rough off-road terrain. They'll usually have a more durable suspension as well as larger puncture-resistant tyres to avoid them getting blocked by sticks, grass or mud.

The Mountain Buggy Ridge is a excellent example of a model of this type. It's an all-terrain model with a variety of impressive features like smooth suspension, a large basket, one-handed steering and quick, one-handed fold. It also works with a car seat and carrycot (with adaptors), so it can be used in as early as 6 months.

Other all-terrain pushchairs include Bugaboo Fox 5, which is a 3-wheeler with some amazing off-road features. It has a massive 10kg basket and can be folded in just one hand. The handlebar can also be adjusted by one hand. It comes with a lockable wheel on the front and never-flat foam-filled tyres.

The GB Maris, a new all-terrain stroller that is eye-catching and was introduced at the Kind + Jugend fair. It's designed for children with mild to moderate mobility needs. It has soft components that can be adjusted including a reclining seat, as well as various color options. The front wheel is lockable and comes with a footbrake for safety and control.

The majority of the models we sell have sturdy, long-lasting frames and sturdy wheels that will last for a long time, as well as excellent storage solutions for all your baby's belongings.
