3 Wheel Compact Stroller Review

There are three-wheel compact strollers for anyone whether you're looking for a jogging stroller or an all-purpose stroller to use every day. The Managing Editor Sentry and Senior Review Writer Wendy Schmitz put these models through the paces on pavement and off-road surfaces, aswell as assessing the comfort of children in the seats.

Stroller Features

The best strollers have features that make traveling with your child easier. Whether you're shopping for a new 3-wheel or a 4-wheel stroller look for features that are convenient, such as large storage baskets as well as a tray for the parent with cup holders, a movable canopy and much more. It's important to determine the features that are important to you and your family, and those you can live without.

The BOB Gear Wayfinder, our top-rated jogging stroller with plenty of convenient features to keep moms as well as dads content and comfortable. The handlebar can be adjusted to three different positions to accommodate caregivers of different heights, and the wrist strap helps ensure that the stroller won't roll away while you're jogging. The Wayfinder has the largest sunshade of the strollers we tested and a glass opening at the top that allows children to look out when they're resting. Jenni's three-year-old son reportedly found the seat to have comfortable cushion, so bumps in the road did not bother him.

The stroller is equipped with a hand brake to help you control slippery surfaces. It can be folded into a slim, compact package that will take up little space in the trunk of your car. It is also possible to convert it to an entire travel system by buying an adapter. It also works with the Uppababy Mesa V2 bassinet.

Solid tires are crucial for strollers that are used on rough terrains. Solid tires aren't as comfortable as spongy or air-filled tires but they're great for navigating potholes and bumps.

The stroller folds up in just two easy steps. It locks in place when folded, and is compact enough to fit into most elevators. However, it's not as easy to maneuver as our other 4-wheel strollers and the mechanism to lock it is a bit confusing. It involves clicking a button on the front of the stroller, opening a flap near the foot area, and then raising the handle. We'd prefer a simpler system that simply clicks into place or opens by pulling.

Stroller Weight

The weight of the entire unit is an important consideration. A heavier stroller is more stable and can perform better on uneven terrain. Many parents find that a stroller with a lighter weight is easier to maneuver, and more suitable for everyday use.

Another important feature of a stroller is the size of its wheels and type. Some strollers have larger wheels, such as those for jogging that can make the ride more comfortable for your baby. 3 wheel pushchair can add weight to the stroller, making it difficult to fold and store, transport and fold.

Some models in our selection have air-filled tires that are designed to provide a comfortable and stable ride for your child, even over rough terrain. However, tires that are filled with air can easily get flat which will need to be changed out. If you are planning to travel a lot with your stroller, we recommend the use of tires that can withstand regular contact with various surfaces and last for a longer time.

Strollers that have swivel wheels on the front are ideal to safely navigate escalators and stairs. Falls on escalators or stairs are the most common accidents that occur due to strollers and are particularly dangerous for infants. If you are unable to avoid using the stairs or escalator with your stroller, we recommend using it only if the child is safely strapped into the seat. Keep them close to you while walking up or down.

Some strollers are a travel system which includes both the car seat as well as the stroller. While these types of products typically boast attractive prices and offer convenience by cutting down on shopping time however, they are typically more expensive than their standalone counterparts and may not function as well in the long run. Many parents regret buying bundles because they may not come with all the features they desire or may not be compatible with their car or child seat. If you plan to upgrade in the near future we suggest that you purchase a stroller that is separate from a capsule or car seat.

Stroller Folding

The most compact 3 wheel strollers fold easily and quickly to make storage and transport a breeze. Some even lock in position automatically when you open them. This feature is particularly beneficial for families that frequently use public transportation or take a car to take a walk.

Three-wheeled strollers can be maneuvered easily in tight spaces, like grocery store aisles or other crowded areas. Many also come equipped with suspension systems that offer an easier ride for your baby and can be particularly helpful on bumpy sidewalks.

The Guava Roam is a lightweight stroller that can be used for jogging. The stroller is a stylish stroller that can also be used as part of a travel set-up with car seat adapters to fit Nuna MaxiCosi, Cybex, and Nuna infant carseats as well as the Uppababy Bassinet. (Car seats and stroller boards sold separately). The stroller folds in two steps and locks into place when it is opened.

A similar stroller with a nice design is the Babyzen Yoyo 2. This stroller is more expensive than our top choices, but is worth it if frequently or live in a city. The lightweight stroller can be folded down to a tiny 20 x 17 x 7 inch size. It has five-point, no-rethread padding on the harness. It can even be used as a pram for newborns or toddlers (with an infant car seat adapter).

The Babyzen is a great product with some nice features. It has a spacious recline, and also has storage space. However some parents are disappointed with its performance. The seat isn't flat when it reclines and there are no cupholders or snack tray for children. The brakes are a bit difficult to engage and the handlebar's height is too high for a lot of short moms.

The Graco Fastaction stroller is designed to be as lightweight as is possible, yet not losing comfort or ease of use. It has a long list of amazing features like a huge basket and a one-handed fold. The only issue with this stroller is that the brakes are a little difficult to activate, and they're not locked when the stroller is folded.

Stroller Safety

A stroller's safety features should help to keep your child safe during use. Some of the top-scoring strollers in our review feature five-point harnesses with adjustable, padded crotch straps that allow for a custom fit. Some strollers come with a padded cushion that shields your child's head should they roll off or fall out of their seat. Some strollers come with safety brakes that lock two wheels. This is particularly important for strollers that run jogging because it prevents them from slipping when they're going up or down escalators or stairs, where they could be particularly dangerous for children.

In our tests, we rated the strollers' maneuverability in three different ways: a stroller's ability to turn and bounce over bumps and dips, its ease of maneuvering when loaded with a child and its capacity to traverse rough terrain. We also evaluated the ease of opening and closing the safety harness, folding and unfolding the stroller, changing its backrest and handlebar height and operating the brakes as well as attaching and removing car seats (if applicable).

We discovered that some 3-wheel strollers are simpler to maneuver than four-wheel models, but this advantage diminishes as your baby grows heavier. We recommend selecting the model that has a hand brake. It can help you slow down or stop without having to exert the same effort as your body by itself. However, a lot of the most efficient swivel wheel strollers come with this feature and only one of our top-rated fixed-wheel models has it.

You should also consider the frequency you'll have to utilize your stroller to go up or down escalators or stairs, and if it's safe to do this. Elevators and stairs pose more dangers because they move mechanical parts, making it difficult to control the movements of the stroller. If you can choose to, we suggest using an elevator or having an adult help you carry the stroller. Some of the most highly-rated strollers are able to be carried up the stairs or an escalator, with their safety brake engaged and locked but it's always safer to be safe than not be.
