World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and boost additional stats. Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount. Item Level When an item is upgraded, its stats are increased in value. This value is the total of all the upgraded advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is due to the sheer number of perks that have to be altered to upgrade an item. It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to the lower levels). Players can see their average item level in their character sheet. When deciding to purchase or sell equipment players can look at the item level. It's a sign of the damage and quality. The item level can also be used to compare items when evaluating the inventory of a seller. On PC, you are able to view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the full description of the item, as well as its ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat. There are several theories about the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory states that the level of an item is determined by an equation that determines the worth of an item's stats actually are. It takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets boost the value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzards actual item level. This isn't the only factor that influences the level of an item. The location of where the item was dropped can alter its stats. For instance, it could increase the item's haste, or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl. Item Stats Item stats are a big component of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game utilizes them in a variety of ways to encourage players to not restrict themselves to a particular weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stat mods of an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by the player's level. The upgrades to items add by increasing certain stats of the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. A grey or white item for instance, can only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at higher costs. Another way to change the stats of an item is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Affixes are used to give items extra damage or other special capabilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to distinguish them by adding a name. All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold as well as items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as other options for rerolling. In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which of the available stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the item level, but every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within the specified range, unless it's an item that is unique or the result of a God roll from a raid boss. Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item level, and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time. Item Luck The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the strength of those properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade item s. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is more useful in early game runs because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains. In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing. The shields, armor, and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140. Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available in the shop or made using the correct ingredients. Item Failure Upgrades to items can be costly and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails. When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which success rates can be increased and the probability of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%. The Luck of an item can influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have a base success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent. The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
