Category A1 Rules For Motorcyclists

The rules for Category A1 are designed for those who wish to drive small motorbikes. These motorcycles have a maximum capacity of 35 kW. They cannot be built from vehicles of more than twice their power.

A1

Category A1 is one of three drone categories controlled by EASA. It is available to aircrafts that are up to a maximum takeoff mass (MTOM) which is 25 kilograms. It requires a flight schedule and a flight log as well as an identification system for remotes and a geoawareness system. The drone should be in the view of the pilot at all time. It is prohibited to fly over large groups of people or in areas used for commercial, industrial or recreational reasons. The drone should stay within 120 meters.

If you wish to fly a drone that is not included in the categories above, you will need a special license from the Civil Aviation Authority. This is known as an operational authorisation. Here you can find out more about how to apply for it.

A1 applicants must have at least 16 years of experience two-wheeled vehicles. They must also have completed the compulsory basic training and passed both a theory as well as a practical test. In addition, they must possess a valid medical certificate.

A1 license holders are able to drive mopeds with the capacity of cylinders not more than 1250 cc, and a power-to-weight ratio that is not more than 0.01 kW/kg. They can also drive motorcycles with the maximum capacity of 125 cc, as well as trikes, quad bikes and quad-bikes.

The category A1 driving license is designed to provide easier access to the next category, which permits licence holders to drive vehicles with a maximum mass of up 35 kW. This permits you to learn to drive less powerful vehicles prior to transitioning to higher categories of licence.

Drones currently in use but do not have the CE mark can be flown under subcategory "A1" until January 1 2024. They are safe and do not pose any significant danger to the general population. They must, however, be at least 150 meters away from industries, buildings and recreational areas. They are also not allowed to fly over crowds or within 5 kilometers of airfields or airports.

A2

If you've completed your CBT training and are looking to get a motorcycle licence You may be eligible for a category-A1 licence. This allows you to drive an unrestricted motorcycle with no sidecar. The motorcycle must have a maximum capacity of 125cc, as well as an output power of 11kW. You must also be 16 years old to obtain this licence. You can also fly drones with the maximum weight of 4kg in the A2 category, but they must be kept at a safe distance away from people when taking off and landing. The drones must be at least 30m away from people in low-speed mode, or 5m when they are not in use. To fly in this category, you must be able to pass the A2 Certificate of Competence exam (A2 CofC).

If you're planning to fly larger drones, you'll need to apply for an operator's license for the particular category. This requires you to complete the General VLOS Certificate training, the flight test, and then prepare an Operations Manual. The process for applying is similar to a PfCO. A2 allows you to fly transitional drones that aren't yet CE-marked, but they have been modified to decrease collision risk with humans. These drones are only allowed to be flown in A2 until year 2022's end. After this, they will have to be in compliance with the A3 rules.


The A1 and A2 categories can help you become a safe and confident motorcyclist. The number of lessons you'll require depends on your level of ability and progress, but a prescribed number of special rides must be undertaken. This is a minimum of five lessons on country road as well as four on highways and three lessons at dawn or in darkness.

A3

This category allows drones with a maximum takeoff mass of 25 kg. Although it is a lower risk operation, strict precautions are required to prevent the risk of accidents. A distance of 150m is required between drones and residential, commercial industrial, recreational and residential areas. This category also requires drones to be equipped with a remote identifier system as well as Geoawareness System.

The tier is also split into sub categories: A1, A2 or even A3. The A1 subcategory allows drones with Class Identification Label C0 or C1 to fly over people who are not in the drone. It imposes an absolute distance of 30 metres from any third party when flying at a high altitude, or 5 meters in slow flight mode.

Drones with the Class Identification Label C2 can be operated under subcategory A2 provided they meet the requirements for size and the remote pilot has passed an additional theoretical knowledge test. This exam is designed to allow the remote pilot to assess their knowledge of the technical and operation mitigations that address the additional dangers associated with flying bigger drones (class A2, below 4kg mass), close to people. A successful passing of this exam is rewarded with a 'certificate of competence to fly category A2'.

There are 'transitional arrangements' that allow legacy drones, that are not certified, to operate in the categories A1 and/or A2 for two years following the implementation of the new EU regulations. The drones of the past cannot be intentionally flown above people and must be operated using an A2 CofC.

To operate a drone in this category, you need to first take the online flyer identification test and then pass a theory exam. In addition, you need to declare that you have gained some practical knowledge of your drone and pass an official declaration of competency. These requirements are similar in nature to the driving license model which means that a driver who first obtains their license for a vehicle of a lower category can then move up to a higher category.

A4

The DOH is preparing specific guidelines for category A4. These will be consistent with the other procedures and include specifics such as the number of dressing changes per day. They will be presented to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infections (IATF-EID) and the DOH National Immunization Technical Advisory Group. The IATF EID and the DOH National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization will examine and approve the guidelines prior to being finalized.

Drones with the C0 or C1 are able to fly within 50 metres of people who are not involved in the incident. This is a low-risk category however, strict safety precautions are required to reduce incidents. Drones that are not classified in either A1 or A2 must have passed an additional theoretical knowledge examination to operate in this subcategory.

This test aims to determine the knowledge of the additional risks associated with flying drones near people. The certificate of competence is issued after successful completion of this test. The operator must also keep a minimum distance of 30 metres from any person who is not involved or 5 metres when flying in a slow-flying mode.

If you're looking to obtain a motorcycle licence you must pass an amount of training sessions to take the theory test and subsequently pass the practical test. This number varies based on your age, skill level and learning speed. A minimum of 12 90-minute classes must be completed.

During these lessons you will become familiar with your car and the traffic laws. In addition, you will be given valuable tips to drive in difficult terrain. In addition to the compulsory lessons, you must attend specific number of special rides.

The new category E brings together the classes A1 (retail) A1 (retail) (financial services and professional services), B1 (offices) and A4 (restaurants/cafes) and B5 for hot food takeaway. It also includes medical/healthy uses such as creches and nurseries, and indoor recreation facilities. The new licensing system is expected to streamline and cut costs. It will also permit landlords to use their properties in ways that are not currently allowed.
