Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs look similar to an infant bassinet, and are attached to the side of a bed. Some have an end that can be lowered for easy access, while others have an inclined design that is perfect for babies who have reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina found this crib to be easy to put together and the instructions were clear, making it a quick and easy build. It also folds down into the size of a small bag and comes with a handy bag for traveling.

Easy to put together

They are small and simple to set up, so they can be placed next to your bed. They also tend to be lighter, making them more portable. Georgina, one of our MFM home testers, was extremely pleased with the Maxi-Cosi Lora crib for being "super straightforward to construct with clear instructions and easy zips." This crib can be used as a travel cot and comes with a handy bag. It includes multiple mesh openings to allow ventilation and its height-adjustable allows it to fit on any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside have a side panel that can be raised, allowing easy access to your baby without having to step out of your bed. This is a great option for mothers who are breastfeeding, or those who want to be close to their baby throughout the night but don't want to take on the risk of co-sleeping.

Many models come with a built-in function that allows you to rock your baby. This can be extremely relaxing for your baby and aids in falling asleep. Some cribs have a reclining position, which is beneficial if your baby suffers from reflux or colic. These should only be used under supervision, and a doctor or health professional should be consulted before trying this position.

A lot of bedside cribs come with a canopy to protect your child from light or noise, which can be helpful in keeping them calm. Some come with a storage compartment underneath, which is great to store extra blankets, nappies and clothes for your baby.

Many cribs for bedside use can be converted into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a key selling feature for a lot of families. MFM's 2021 Mother and Baby Awards winner the Joie Roomie Go for instance, comes with removable side panels with conversion kits, as well as a tummy tilt, making it a versatile travel bed. It has five height adjustments that can be matched to your bed. Our MFM home testers loved the Joie Roomie Go for being comfortable and easy to put together. It is also compact. The Graco Play Yard Also known as a Pack and Play, is another popular choice. It was a finalist for the 2022 Mother&Baby Award.

Cosy and comfortable

You can monitor your child from the comfort of your bed with the bedside crib. It's an excellent option for moms who are recovering from a C-section since you can easily lift your child towards you to feed them at night or change their nappies without having to get out of the bed. And the cosiest cribs also come with mesh sides that you can view your baby through.

Some cribs lower the barrier completely, allowing the option of sleeping together without the associated risks (check that your chosen model meets the latest safety requirements though). Others allow you to keep the barrier lowered but pop it back up after you've lifted baby out, which is ideal for parents who have a fear of their little one rolling off the edge of their mattress.

The Luah is the winner of the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for Best Crib, Cot, or Moses Basket - is designed to attach to bedsteads as well as divan beds, but it does require a few more straps than other models (check the specs to be sure that your bed will be able to fit). It's a spacious design with an opening side panel and a patented perforated base that creates an air cushion that helps increase air flow. Plus, there's travel cot bedside crib integrated setting for reflux and a 360 swivel to allow you to rotate the crib to suit the baby's position.

If you're looking for something a smaller in size than the Tutti Bambini COZee is another stylish choice with oak legs and stylish fabrics to fit your decor. It is also very easy to assemble. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was able to put it together quickly and without requiring any instructions. It's also a great travel cot. It folds flat and easily fits into bags.

The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also slightly larger than the average, however it is still compact and easy to fit to your bed. Georgina also found it easy to put together although she thought the instructions could have been more clear about the zips.

Easy to clean

Find cribs with removable mattress covers that can be washed in the machine while looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. That will help you keep it clean from leaky nappies, infant sick and dribbles. It is also recommended to choose an item that can be easily disassembled to allow you to clean and sanitise all the nooks.

This is crucial, as it will ensure that all germs and dirt have been cleared away. Make sure that the sides of the crib are secure to ensure that your baby won't slide off or become trapped.

You'll also need to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and it's a good fit with your bed. This is especially crucial if you're using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. They are designed to fit securely to the side of the bed for parents, allowing parents to easily access their baby throughout the night for feeding and comforting while still ensuring separate sleeping areas.

Another thing to consider when selecting a crib for your bed is whether it has any additional features you might consider useful. Some cribs can tilt or rock, which is ideal for babies who are fussy.

Also, you should ensure that your cot or crib has a sturdy and flat mattress that is snugly inserted into the frame. This will decrease the chance of SIDS by making sure that your baby's feet and head aren't slipping into gaps or folds in the bedding.

It's a good idea to purchase a new mattress for the crib or travel cot rather than use one that was passed down or purchased second-hand. Mattresses that are used are more likely to lose their shape with time, increasing the risk for SIDS. All cribs that are new should be compliant with BS EN 1130:2019, the latest standard that introduces stricter requirements for safe and effective sleep solutions.

Multi-faceted

A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib, as they're sometimes known) attaches to your bed to allow you to easily reach your baby at night without having to get out of your sleeping space. They can also be used as a separate crib during the daytime. They usually come with a side panel that can be lowered so that you can be able to see your baby and hold the baby. Some cribs let you keep the side panel down at night. This lets you be close and comfortable with your baby while minimizing the risks of sharing a bed. Some cribs will also convert into a travel cot, or include additional features such as tilting, rocking (use with caution, be sure to speak to your GP about this), or turning into an older baby cot or playpen.

The SnuzPod 4 crib is popular for a variety of reasons, not just because of its sleek design in Scandi. This one has six height adjustments and a useful storage shelf. It's also a little larger and heavier than some of our more travel-friendly cribs, but it comes in an attractive bag that keeps it clean and dust-free when stored.

It's simple to put together with clear instructions and helpful tools to guide you. It's also easy to clean with the mattress cover that is machine washable and breathable fabric. It also comes with a few features than other cribs we've used including an anti-reflux incline as well as a rocking function, and a storage pocket.

Jasmin says that this crib is great because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night for a peaceful feeding and larger than most Moses Baskets, which means it will last for a longer time before my son grows out". She also loves how easy it is to clean and how it feels sturdy and well made. It can be placed on a divan, making it a great choice for those with a limited space. travel cot bedside crib is also equipped with a convenient bag to take on your travels. A perfect all-rounder.
