News

Toto is one of the most loved groups in the world. With more than 35 million records sold worldwide and countless collaborations with some of the biggest artists (Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Steely Dan), Toto has become synonymous with credibility in music. The group has been evolving throughout the years, and their fans have kept up with the changes. They also have adjusted to the changing music scene by continuing to create new songs and touring.

Toto released their debut album Turn Back in early 1981 when they released Turn Back. It was a departure from the band's previous style. It was a huge success in Japan but not in the US. The label was beginning to doubt if they would be able to continue. The album also included a different lead singer, Fergie Frederiksen, who was not a founding member of the group. The band decided to conduct an audition for a replacement and chose Joseph Williams, who had previously played guitar on several of their live recordings.

The band toured in 1998 to promote the album, and to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. They released a boxset Old Is New. It included the three new tracks on 40 Trips Around the Sun, as well as completed recordings of four older tracks featuring Jeff Porcaro on drums and either David Hungate or Mike Porcaro on bass.

After the tour, the band released a compilation album called The Best of Toto and reformed with a lineup that included drummer John Pierce and keyboardist Robert "Sput" Searight from Huey Lewis and the News. In 2024, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes and drummer Shannon Forrest replaced Taplin and Searight, and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham joined the band.

Toto is currently working on a new studio album. The band has announced that they will perform live at the Zenith de Paris - La Villette on February 12 2025. The concert will be part of the Toto XIV tour, which includes European and Japanese dates. Fans can purchase tickets on the official website of the band.

Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate, and keyboardist David Paich were regulars on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher. In addition, Joe Porcaro, the father of Jeff, David, and Mike Porcaro, was a session percussionist for a number of other famous musicians.

Toto released its third album, Turn Back in the early 1980s. It was an arena rock album featuring heavier guitars and less keyboards. The album's lackluster sales in North America made the band's future uncertain, but its popularity in Japan made it possible to continue their careers. David Paich, the keyboardist and co-founder of the group, quit Toto IV after its release to focus on his own solo project. Toto continued to record and tour, but the bassist and founding member Hungate was replaced by Leland Sklar.
