ADHD Medication - Treatment For ADHD

Treatment can help those suffering from ADHD focus better, become less impulsive and more relaxed. It usually involves a mix between medicine and therapy.

Stimulants increase brain activity in the areas that regulate behavior and attention. Methylphenidate is also referred to as Ritalin is among the most commonly prescribed medications for adults suffering from ADHD.

Stimulants

Stimulants are drugs that increase brain activity in areas that control attention and behavior. They are often used in conjunction with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Stimulants increase the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain. This helps you to focus and reduces the effects of certain impulses, such as those that trigger impulsive behavior. They are generally accepted by both adults and children. However, adhd in adults medication may have side effects, such as jitteriness, headaches or an increased heart rate.

There are a variety of different stimulant drugs available that include methylphenidate (Ritalin), dextroamphetamine (Dexamphetamine), Atomoxetine (Strattera) and modafinil (Provigil). The results of the largest network meta analysis to date, published by the British Medical Journal in 2016 suggest amphetamines to adults suffering from ADHD. Lisdexamfetamine, a drug, is approved in the UK and has an advantage over stimulants that are short-acting because it doesn't wear off during the daytime. It also only requires only one dose a day. Patients used to to take short-acting amphetamines three or four time a day. It was a challenge for patients to remember to take and could result in low adherence.

It is important to get a complete medical history to determine if someone with ADHD might have other medical conditions that contribute to their symptoms. A medical issue such as thyroid disorders, sleep apnea or other issues may be contributing to your child's exhaustion or difficulty concentrating. It is also important to bring up any issues with substance abuse to your doctor, since excessive use of illegal prescription or over the counter drugs could have an impact on your child's ability to concentrate.

Many medical professionals recommend that children are treated for ADHD to enhance their school performance and make it possible for them to develop into happy, healthy adults. However, the decision to medicate a child for ADHD is not taken lightly by parents and can be a lengthy and complicated process. Many children suffer from side effects like insomnia, irritability and anxiety, but the majority of the time, these issues can be overcome with a cautious monitoring and gradual increase of dosages.

Some parents opt for private treatment, which includes a series appointments with a psychiatrist in order to start medication and track the progress. This could include up to five sessions followed by monthly or fortnightly appointments as the child becomes used to the medication. This is an excellent option for families who find the NHS waiting lists to be extremely long and those who have private healthcare that can offer more efficient access to care. A detailed report of your child's progress will be shared with your GP and they will monitor the medication prescribed by your psychiatrist. In certain instances you might be referred back to the NHS for this procedure to continue to ensure that your GP is aware of every medications prescribed to your child. They can carry out regular checks and reviews.
