Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction for those living near. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud cries which could be disruptive to those who live in condos or apartments.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are difficult to tell apart. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once the birds' sex is known the breeding process can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. This is a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and realize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself and not a concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their families until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

Lolita is gorgeous, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see that she is released back into the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile state.

Since her captor doesn't have to divulge this information, it is unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the death of orcas in captivity.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca thought to be her mother.
