ADHD and Anxiety Medication


Many people with ADHD also suffer from anxiety, and their symptoms can worsen when they take stimulants. But non-stimulant medicines like Atomoxetine (Strattera) and viloxazine (Qelbree) can ease anxiety as well as ADHD symptoms.

Non-stimulant ADHD medications are prescribed when stimulants don't assist or cause unacceptable adverse side negative effects. These medications do not function as quickly as stimulants however they can be extremely efficient. They function more slowly, and prolong brain receptors involved in regulating emotions and behavior. Atomoxetine is a non-stimulant medicine widely used for ADHD is a drug with very low abuse or addiction risk. It has a warning that it can cause suicidal feelings in a small percentage of people.

The FDA has not approved antidepressants to treat ADHD. However, some mental health professionals may prescribe them to patients who suffer from both ADHD and anxiety. They work by affecting the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in order to reduce anxiety and also aid in the treatment of ADHD symptoms like hyperactivity and the tendency to be impulsive. Other medications that may be employed "off-label" to treat ADHD and anxiety include clonidine which acts on the vagus nerve, and guanfacine. Both act on a specific brain chemical called norepinephrine.

In addition to medications as well, behavioral therapy may be beneficial for those suffering from ADHD and anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral (CBT) focuses primarily on teaching skills to overcome anxiety and improve functioning. It assists people to recognize and modify unhelpful thinking patterns that can cause anxiety.
