The term "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took shape in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into different species in an orderly and predictable manner. Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in the population. This variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation. Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in schools. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation. They refer to their belief as "theistic evolution.” It is sometimes called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable. In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. What is Creationism? When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution. STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the country. The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day. On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
