The Band Toto

Toto is often accused of being too polished or calculating. However, when they perform live, the band shows a rawer energy. Guitarist-extraordinaire Steve Lukather demonstrates why he is considered one of the best session musicians in the business.

Albums

The discography of American rock group Toto includes 13 studio albums, four live albums, as well as a number of compilations. In addition to the release of original music, Toto has also done collaborations with other artists as well as on soundtracks for films. The band has won multiple Grammy Awards for their work.

Before Toto was formed, members of the band did sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum in 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 as a result of the collaboration.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the singer Fergie Frederiksen quit the group, and the band held auditions to find the new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the group recorded their album Fahrenheit in 1986.

Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The band went through old recordings and tapes to create the album. The album was well-received by fans and the band went on a tour featuring former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.


While touring for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun, drummer Leland Sklar left the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included live recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.

Toto is an American rock band formed in 1977 in Van Nuys, Greater Los Angeles. The six-member group consists of guitarist and vocalist Steve Lukather, bassist David Paich as well as keyboardist/vocalist Steve Porcaro, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarist and vocalist Joseph Williams. The band's diverse mix of influences has made them one of the most well-known bands ever. ????? was featured in more than 200 movies and television shows including The Godfather & The Prince of Egypt.

In 1983 the group released Toto IV, which earned them worldwide praise. Following the album's success The band embarked on a world tour support of it. During the tour, lead singer Bobby Kimball was arrested on drug charges. At the end of the tour the band decided to let him go, and they hired singer/guitarist Joseph Williams to take his place. David Hungate, the drummer also quit the band after the tour. Leland Sklar replaced him.

The TOTO Museum is an impressive futuristic structure that houses a number of exhibition rooms dedicated solely to telling the story about the company and its most innovative product. The exhibits include toilets, faucets, and tableware that have aided the growth of the TOTO brand over the past half century. The museum is home to special exhibits all year round.

Toto has released a variety of music videos. The group has also released numerous compilation videos and DVDs. The most popular video for the group is "Africa" that has over one billion views on YouTube. The video is set in a library, with the band performing atop the stack of African books.

The song "Africa" is from the album Toto IV. The song was written by the band members and produced David Paich. It was a huge success in Europe and a variety of other countries. The single's success helped Toto gain popularity following their previous album, Turn Back, failed to chart in the United States.

Following the release of the album, Toto went on a world tour. The group included touring musicians Lenny Castro and Shannon Forrest. Warren Ham, Shem von Schröeck and Shem von Schroeck were also in the group. Steve Lukather also released his second solo record, Luke.

In 1985 In 1985, drummer Fergie Frederiksen quit Toto due to personal reasons. Toto decided to conduct an audition and eventually chose Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.

Prior to and during the creation of Toto the members performed session work for a variety of artists. Toto was created after Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Keyboardist Paich was frequent on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

In 1998, Toto started working on an album titled Old Is New. The album featured three brand new tracks and several completed recordings of songs from the past. The album was a hit across the globe and the band embarked on a world tour to promote it.

Toto known for the hit single "Africa" Recently, the band came together to promote their latest album, All In. The album came out on November 6, 2018, and included three songs from the forthcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun, plus completed recordings of four older tracks with Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike or Steve Porcaro on bass. The album also included a cover version of Weezer’s track "Hash Pipe," which the band re-released after hearing it on the radio.

The members of Toto have performed with artists like Steely Dan, Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton, Michael McDonald, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band, Los Lobotomys, Boz Scaggs, Seals and Crofts, Larry Carlton, Earth, Wind & Fire, Yes, Eddie Van Halen, David Foster, Yoso, Los Lobos and Richard Page. Additionally, the group has recorded music for a variety of TV and film shows.

Toto was formed in Los Angeles by high school age friends drummer David Paich, guitarist Steve Lukather, and brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro. The band has sold more than 40 million albums and is among the most listened-to bands in the world. Toto continues to play sold-out shows all over the world and has won numerous awards and honors. Toto's members are serious musicians however they do not take themselves too seriously, which has contributed to the success of their music.
