Cleaning Robot Mop and Vacuum Combo

Most robot vacuums and mops pair with an application that lets you save maps of your house, set cleaning schedules and select mopping settings. Some models with dual spinning pads also automatically return to their docks during cleaning to flush out dirty water and clean their brushes.

If your model is using disposable pads, take them off and wash them (if safe) every few cleaning cycles to avoid the buildup of bacteria. Also, you should clean the tray they sit on between cleanings.

Preparation

Many robot mops utilize pads with a cleaning solution that slide across the floor to soften sticky spots and other marks using scrubbing motions or brushes. These pads should be removed, washed (if they can be washed) and dried between uses to prevent the growth of bacteria and prevent them from smelling unpleasant. Some models also have brushes on the sides and the bottom of the robot that need to be washed, rinsed or replaced after every few cleaning cycles.

The most efficient 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop combos are easy-to-use and come with features that cut down on the amount of maintenance required after cleaning. They include automatic emptying of the dustbin, self-cleaning pads and docks which ensure that your robot is ready to mop again almost immediately after a cleaning cycle. If you want your robot's sensors to be able navigate and avoid obstacles, wipe them down with a soft towel or cloth every couple of cycles. This step will help remove dust that can hinder sensors and cause errors.

Select a robot mop that is compatible with carpets if you have carpets. Most robot mops work well on hard surfaces, however those which can also vacuum or scrub floors may need to be reprogrammed to recognize or avoid carpets. Some robotic vacuum cleaners as well as mop cleaners are equipped with mapping functions. This lets you see the areas that the robot has cleaned and also those it hasn't.

The majority of apps-connected robots mops utilize sensors to navigate through the home and avoid obstacles, but they can also become confused or lost. To ensure that your robot's navigation and obstacle-avoidance capabilities are as efficient as they can be, update the mopping app regularly with new software updates. We recommend testing the robot's performance at home by constructing an obstacle course for it to race through prior to purchasing it.

Most robot mops come with two tanks one for clean water and one for dirty water. The tank that is dirty needs to be filled and emptied on a regular basis. The water tanks can be lifted off the base which makes it easier to clean them and rinse them with mild soap and warm water. The majority of models have a drip tray under the tank that collects any liquid spilled. It is recommended to empty your drip tray every cleaning cycle to prevent bacteria from growing.

Cleaning the Water Tank

Most robot vacuums and mop combos have a water tank to clean. The majority of manufacturers recommend cleaning the tank on a regular basis, depending on the frequency you use your robot. This is essential if you want your bots to last for an extended period of time. Some brands, such as the top choices of our reviews, have a tanks that are washable and removable so that you can wash away dirty water and allow the tank to dry between cleaning sessions.

The majority of the latest mop-vacs we tested are compatible with an app that lets you save maps of your home and set up cleaning schedules or select cleaning options. This is one of the features we look for when selecting the right model, since it makes the process of setting up and operating your robot cleaner much simpler. If the robot you select does not have an app, it's still possible to control the essential functions of the bot using a button or remote.

All of the newer models we've tested can clean up dirt and dust on various surfaces, which is a huge improvement over earlier versions of robot cleaners that mostly just pushed a pad filled with water across the floor. However they aren't designed to handle huge spills, which still need to be cleaned by hand. They can't move furniture and can get lost in rooms with a lot of clutter.

Some newer bots have brushes on their bottom and sides which can be removed and laundered, so be certain to follow the manufacturer's directions on how to do this (typically you'll need a damp microfiber cloth). Most bots also come with sensors that help them navigate floors and avoid obstacles. It is essential to wipe the sensors down every couple of cleaning cycles, especially if they are pressed up against the floor.

Additionally, although it is possible to put other cleaners into the robot's tank (for instance, vinegar), we advise against doing so unless the manufacturer suggests it. This could cause damage to the robot and invalidate its warranty.

Cleaning the Drip Tray

If your robot mop and vacuum has a separate dock that doubles as its water tank, it will need to be cleaned regularly. The dock can collect dirt, dust and grit and will need to be removed and washed when the mop has been cleaned. A majority of our choices have a self-cleaning feature that you can access via the app or button on the mop. This helps keep the tank in good condition and helps prevent mildew from developing.

It is also essential to wash the area of the dock where the pads are washed. If left wet, it can become slimy and even smell. If your model uses disposable or washable mop pads, make sure you are washing them in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions between cleaning cycles. Hybrid mop/vacuum units that have brushes on the sides and bottom of the unit are also affected. After each cleaning cycle remove the brushes and clean them using an abrasive or a cloth.

Some of the most sophisticated robot vacuum-mop combinations we've tested contain sensors that allow them to navigate floors and avoid obstacles, however it's still important to wipe off the sensor areas regularly. This can prevent dirt and grime from obstructing the sensors and leading to misjudgment.

Although the majority of robot vacuums and mop units require some effort they are an excellent option for busy homeowners. My Source can keep floors looking nice, eliminate the need for heavy lifting and help you save the most valuable resource in a home -- your free time.

There are a few companies that are trying to develop better vacuum-mop machines but they're quite a ways from our standard. However, we expect these machines to improve over time, just like all other robot vacuums in the past.

Cleaning the Brushes

Maintaining your robot vacuum and mop is essential, just as maintaining your vacuum cleaner. Wipe down sensors to make it easier to navigate, empty and rinse the water tank, clean pet hair clogs that block brushes Keep charge ports clean and change the rollers and filter as suggested by the manufacturer. These steps will ensure that your robot mop and vacuum combo works efficiently for a long period of time.

Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab Executive Director Carolyn Forte evaluates and tests cleaning equipment in the Laboratory which includes robot vacuum and mop combos. Her team has been testing and offering products for over 40 years.

Robot vacuums and mops are ideal for dealing with both dry debris (dust, dirt) and wet messes (spills or staining) in one cleaning session without switching machines. These multitaskers are great at making time and effort. They're also great for those with a hectic schedule.

Some robots are controlled by an app and have more features. For example this model comes with an obstacle course map that shows our course which is a major selling feature. You can also schedule and alter cleaning sessions using the app, switch mopping mode, and check the battery level. Other models provide voice activation, such as this model that integrates with Alexa, for hands-free control.

If you are in the market for a robot mop or vacuum, make sure that it has the features you want. While all models use pads with water over floors, some have scrubbers that can be used to clean grout, or a rotating brush roll for more intensive scrubbing. Some models come with filters that can be washed or replaced to lessen the odor.

Some mopping robots dump their dirty pads into an empty base that automatically dumps them into a trash bin, eliminating the need to manually wash the pads or refill the tank. Others, such as the Noesis Florio, have reusable pads that can be washed and dry between usage. If you opt for the model that has reusable pads, make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions for drying and washing them to ensure they look their best.
