Best Rated Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums are great for keeping your floors tidy but they are not a substitute for a traditional vacuum. Even the best robots can struggle to penetrate carpets and rugs. They also often get caught in cords and socks.

Staying on top of routine maintenance (replacing filters cutting hair tangled from brushes, and emptying the dust bin) can help your robot last longer.

Battery Life

Most robot vacuums are capable of handling a few cleaning sessions before needing a charge. The Ecovacs Q30S Combo is the second-best of our overall choices. It has an energy-efficient battery that can last up to 180 minute (3,230 square foot) on one charge. This amount of runtime will be more than enough for homes that have carpets, hard flooring and carpets with low pile or larger homes with rooms that are similar in size.


A longer battery life means the robot can spend less time charging and can spend more time cleaning. It's recommended to select models that have a self-emptying dust bin because they are more efficient when it comes to collecting debris and returning to the dock for recharging. It is important to clean or replace filters and clean the sensors and camera regularly so that they can be seen clearly.

robotic hoovers can be a useful feature, as you can program your robot so that it only cleans specific rooms or avoids areas where it's likely to crash into furniture and other obstacles. This feature is also beneficial to ensure that your robot is able to reach under and around furniture, such as sofas, beds and other large objects. Some cheap robovacs offer boundaries that you can place on the floor to block off areas, while others utilize sensors and cameras for this purpose.

Even the best robot vacuums can't replace a conventional vacuum when it comes to heavy-duty, large-pile dirt and debris. It is recommended to keep an electric vacuum in your home to tackle these tasks, and also schedule robot vacs for light cleanings throughout the week.

Navigation

A robot should be able to navigate around your home without getting stuck or crashing into things like metal screws or loose pet hair or sand. In our tests, a tracking device is used to track the robot's movements through the multi-room lab. It then maps its surroundings. robotic hoovers test how the robot avoids obstacles like power cords, furniture legs, and pet waste.

The most advanced robots are able to identify several floors and recognize landmarks like doors and windows. The most advanced robots, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra have a dual sensor navigation system, which uses the LIDAR to map out a room and a structured-light camera at the front to spot objects in real-time. The S8 can evade obstacles like power cords and furniture legs. It also has the capability to store up to four floor maps.

The more affordable models don't have this type of object detection and rely on bump sensors, which aren't as precise. In my testing they were able to rip through cords, dog poop, and even a pair of shoes placed in the middle of the room. The most affordable choice, the Dreametech D10+, is an exception to this. It is a great carpet and hard floor pickup, great tangle and hair pickup, and an almost perfect auto empty score.

Another feature that is important is a huge onboard dustbin that doesn't require manually emptied, and for models that mop, a tank of water which can store weeks of mopping sessions. The Karcher RCV 5 has this feature and has a large enough footprint that it can be placed under furniture however, it's not so huge that it won't fit in the space between your bathtub and toilet.

Apps

Robot vacuums are a lot like their upright counterparts and require lots of technology to bring them up to speed. The result is a pretty mature market that is brimming with options. But even the best models require some interaction with their users - especially when cleaning schedules are being planned, establishing a home floor plan and establishing virtual barriers.

To help reduce this interaction, consider looking for a model that has its own app to identify the layout of your home and save these settings for future use. This will allow the robot vacuum to continue where it left off in subsequent runs, rather than having the mapping process restarted each time.

It's important to look out for a model that offers zones or spot cleaning modes. These allow you to tell the robot vacuum to focus on a particular area for example, like under the dining room table after an enormous family meal. You can choose to do this using the app or by voice commands.

Many models also offer objects avoidance. It allows the robot when it comes across objects in its path, like a box of shoes or a crate containing dog toys, to coach itself around. This prevents it from running into objects that could damage its sensors or cause jams.

Some of the most expensive models in our tests include this feature. However, they tend to rely on bump sensors for this, and they weren't always able to stay clear of things in my test homes.

Pet Hair

When it comes to picking up pet hair, look for a model that's designed specifically to handle this kind of debris. The best models have powerful suction capabilities and a brush that is free of getting caught in a knot, and an emptying mechanism that can automatically dump hair into the trash bin when needed. Some are also able to detect dirt levels and adjust the cleaning intensity accordingly. They are able to detect items that aren't part of the flooring in your home like furniture and toys, food bowls cords, and so on.

Some robot vacuums come with extra pet-friendly features. These include a water dispenser which is used to mop floors and an HEPA filtration system that reduces allergens, such as pet dust. They might also have a quieter mode of operation to minimize the amount of noise produced during cleaning sessions.

Robot vacuums with maps are a great option for pet owners since they're designed to evaluate your home and devise a plan of attack based on the layout and obstacles in each room. For instance, the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum is a smart vacuum that has the impressive ability to map rooms and navigate around furniture and other obstructions with accelerometer and gyroscope sensors that work together to learn the layout of your room.

Other models that are more advanced allow you to define no-go zones that are areas that the robot is supposed to stay clear of, such as fragile items or pet feeding spots. You can adjust these settings through an app. This feature is particularly useful for a busy household, as it allows you to schedule cleaning time and make adjustments without having to be in the same room with the vacuum. Spot cleaning is an additional fantastic feature. You can instruct the vacuum cleaner to clean a spot that is particularly dirty or filled with pet hair.

Dust Bin

If you don't need something small, consider a robot with a big bin or even a self-emptying bin. We recommend going for a model that has a large bin or even a self-emptying dustbin. The former will help you keep up with emptying the bin often enough to keep track of its performance while the latter will help you save time and effort by automatically emptying its contents into an internal container every few cleans.

Regardless of the size of your house the majority of robots are able to climb up and around furniture, and they are able to detect and navigate around household obstacles such as shoes, loose cords, and dog puke. Find models with smart mapping capabilities. This lets them "learn the structure of your home and plan an efficient route.

Certain models also offer spot cleaning, which allows you to manually target an area of your house for intensive cleaning. We've discovered that many of the top performers in our tests can take in fine particles such as baking soda and sand together with larger debris such as oatmeal orzo pasta screws, and pet hair.

According to the manufacturer the company, robots can last for years and perform as well, so long as they are properly maintained. For example cleaning hair that is tangled out of brushes, emptying dust bins after each use, and wiping cameras and sensors down when needed. The most reliable robots are more flexible. This allows you to replace or repair components such as wheels and batteries as they wear out.
