The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words to ensure that the future generation could understand the words. However, many of the words were replaced with foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Toto's early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the first half of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to benefit from sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers' products to expand its range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company adopted a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and applied the same method in its sales strategy. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example, has a powerful tornado flush that is more eco green than traditional toilets. The company uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than standard models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing, and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors will find Toto products sold all over. The museum even has a bathroom that includes a WASHLET toilet as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The band was initially four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster but not without its problems. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to deliver the top single or they would rescind the album. Luckily for Toto they did with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. ???? ??? and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. The band managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

The band has performed all over the world, performing to an crowd of millions, with sold-out shows across Europe, North America, Asia as well as Australia and New Zealand. The repertoire of the band is extensive, and their collective catalog has accumulated over billion streams on streaming services around the world. Steve Lukather and Joe Williams have developed a deep colorful friendship that is thriving professionally on a global scale. In 2018, the duo celebrated their 40 Tours Around The Sun by a hugely successful tour around the world. The album with the same name reached #5 on Billboard 200. The new tour of the band includes their best hits and rarely live cuts, as well as a selection of songs from Lukather and Williams their individual catalogs.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. Its more punk-rock sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
