About Toto

The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.

In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name across the globe.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. ?????? ???? is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and make a new album using an entirely new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during the recent tour. The first album of the totos was the self-titled Toto, released in 1978. It was a huge success that helped the band gain international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 albums that have also been a hit.

In 1984, Toto wrote their first and to date only, film score for the film Dune. ???? ???? was a huge project that required the entire band to be involved. The album that followed, Kingdom of Desire, was a record that also had a great success. After a world-tour, Bobby Kimball quit the band. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band then forged ahead with their fifth album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of songs, including "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and stepped away from the stage. This gave the individual members of the band a chance to pursue solo projects. In ???? ??? , the group came back together to tour and make an album. This was the first time that all original members were on stage together in over 10 years.

The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members were together on stage at the same time. Following this, the band was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time all original Toto members appeared performing together for more than 31 years. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Tours

Toto has remained one of the most loved rock bands for over three decades, scoring massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." The band's anthemic arena-rock is inspired by a variety of styles, including progressive rock, world rhythms, soul, and jazz.

The band suffered several setbacks during their later years, despite their popularity. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes took a medical leave of absence. Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over and the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a string of disappointing albums led Toto to break up for a few years. The group returned to touring in 2012 following the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album was a return form for the group and the tour was accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had rejoined the group.

Toto's music remains as relevant today as it was back in the 70s and 80s and is gaining new fans with each new generation. Their success has made them a long-lasting fixture in pop culture, and their live performances are always packed with energy and excitement.
