What is what is a Patio Gas Bottle?

Patio gas bottles are a type of LPG (liquefied Petroleum Gas) cylinders that are specifically designed for outdoor use such as barbecues and patio heaters. It is available in green bottles up to 13kg, and can be compatible with a standard regulator clip-on.

Patio gas is different to propane in that it's a distinct type of LPG that has been developed specifically for outdoor use. It can be either propane or butane. Both are equally efficient and can be used for outdoor appliances, such as barbecues and patio heaters. However, propane is better suited for colder temperatures.

All of our gas bottles feature an integrated Gas Trac indicator so that you can easily tell that the gas is low. They're also compatible with a large selection of BBQ's and other outdoor heating devices. If you own a big barbecue with four burners or more, or are planning to purchase one in the future we suggest our patio gas bottle of 13kg. This bottle isn't just ideal for BBQs however, it will also supply you with enough gas to power your patio heater during the long summer evenings.

When choosing a propane or butane gas bottle, you should consider what type of leisure equipment you're using it with since the two kinds have slightly different boiling points. Propane is able to boil at -42degC while butane boils at 2degC. Propane is more suited to outdoor use, while butane can also be used indoors in appliances like portable heaters as well as one-burner cookers.

The cylinder valve that is found on all of our gas bottles is connected to a regulator that controls the pressure that the liquefied gas releases through when connected to an appliance. This is important as the temperature of the appliance can affect the rate of release of gas which could cause damage or even a fire. The regulator is connected to the cylinder by a screw-in or clip-on regulator, depending on the type of cylinder and bottle you purchased.

What is a Patio Gas Cylinder?

The term 'porch gas cylinder can be a bit confusing because it could refer to two distinct things: propane or butane. However it is true that, as the name implies, patio gas is specifically a type of LPG cylinder that is sold with outdoor appliances such as barbeques and patio heaters in mind. Therefore, the cylinders have a specific size and type that can only be used with these types of appliances. They come with a specific connector and valve that will not be compatible with the standard BBQ gas bottles or other appliances without a conversion kit.

Most leisure appliances are fitted with a regulator which reduces the pressure of the gas as it travels from the bottle to the appliance. The regulators are connected to the cylinder heads using either a screw or clip connection, depending on the size and type of bottle (see below for more information). Propane and Butane are two types of LPG. However they have a different boiling point, so you can't switch them unless you also alter the gas regulator on your appliance.

All Calor propane and butane gas bottles have an inbuilt Gas Trac indicator that lets you know when it's time to replace your cylinder. The date you test your cylinder can be found on the side collars. It's engraved with two numbers and a letter. The letter indicates the quarter during which the test is due. (A for the first, B for the second and then on.) The number is the year of the test.

Store your gas bottle outdoors in a cool and dry area. It's not advisable to store it inside, as this increases the chance of explosion or fire in the event of an electrical issue. It is also advisable to keep the gas bottle away from flame-prone objects, such as curtains and clothing.

When it's time to replace the gas bottle for your patio, make sure that you remove the regulator and clean the valves prior reattaching them. It's also essential to dispose of empty gas bottles properly, as they shouldn't be thrown into regular rubbish due to safety and environmental dangers. Take your empty gas bottles to a recycling facility that accepts them or contact the manufacturer to inquire about return and commercial collection options.
