Choosing the Best Crib Newborn

The Westport Cot Bed will look gorgeous in a Scandi nursery. It also comes with a amount of flexibility by offering three mattress support levels and the capability to convert into a toddler bed.

Bassinets are the best option when you live in a smaller house. Cribs can take up more space. Many parents prefer a crib due to security reasons.

Safety

Choosing the best crib newborn is crucial for your baby's health and well-being. You must ensure that the crib meets current safety standards, and is free from any dangers that could cause harm during sleep. It should be well-constructed and strong, with no loose pieces that may catch on clothing or pose the risk of choking. It is also crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembly and use and check the crib regularly for signs of wear or damage.

The first thing to check is the spacing between the slats. It should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches, to keep your baby's head or limbs getting trapped in between them. You should also be able easily reach and see your baby in the crib. If not see, the slats need to be broader and not as close to each other.

Another aspect of the crib to consider is the mattress support system. It should be adjustable so that you can lower the mattress of your crib as your child grows. This will reduce the risk that your child will climb out of the crib once they begin to crawl.

Other safety features to look for include the fitted sheet that is able to fit the mattress in a secure way as well as an enduring and solid construction. It is also recommended to choose a crib with fixed sides instead of ones with drop sides, which can be hazardous for your baby. You should also be in the same bedroom as your baby until they are old enough for them to be able to go off on their own.

Last but not least, ensure that the crib is kept away from windows and radiators, and that any hanging objects such as blind cords or curtains are not in reach. You should also remove any items that could pose a choking risk, such as pillows or blankets. Be cautious when buying used cribs as they may not be in compliance with the current safety standards or have been recalled.

Design

It is crucial to keep in mind that cribs can look identical, but they must meet the strict safety standards. The majority of cribs we examined are constructed in a similar way to ensure the structural stability. Most cribs have circular bars that do not have gaps or rough surfaces that could trap a baby or pinch them. We also tested and rated each crib for how easily it was to use and to assemble. We recommend choosing a crib with fewer parts to avoid confusion.

The Evolur Sprout crib is one of our favorites. It features a chic contemporary design and is available in a variety of colors, including two-tone options. It also has an all-inclusive mattress fit and is Greenguard Gold certified to have low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could release gas into the nursery.

Another alternative is the Stork Craft Equinox 3-in-1. The crib is sleek, modern and minimalist in design. It's ideal for modern nurseries. The crib is available in a variety of finishes and comes with four different mattress heights, so your baby can use it from birth to toddler. We tried the crib and found it to be sturdy and stable, with no creaking or flexing when a child weighed a lot of weight inside.

If you're planning to have more children, you might want to consider a convertible crib. These options can be transformed into a bed for toddlers and then a full-size mattress, offering excellent value for money. Our test parents have given the Sweet2Sleep Crib high marks as an example of convertible beds. The side rails that slide down were praised by many parents for making feeding their children at night more secure and less stressful. They also said that the crib was spacious enough room for the baby to sleep comfortably while mom and dad slept.

The Colby 4-in-1 from the Carter's by DaVinci is a fantastic option for those who prefer a more traditional style. This crib is cheaper than the Stork Craft and has an elegant design that is suitable for every nursery. It comes with three different mattress heights however certain parents and toddlers may feel it is a bit low.

Mattress

Babies are messy and a washable crib mattress is essential. Spitting up from diapers, baby spit up and other accidents can leave mattresses damp and dirty that can cause mildew and bacterial infections that could affect infants. Look for a product that can be washed with a cloth or cleaned with mild cleaner. You should also choose a waterproof mattress cover to prevent liquids from getting into the mattress and causing health problems.

Look for a mattress that is rated up to 10 years so that it is suitable for toddlers. Many of the mattresses featured in this review can be reversible, with toddler and infant sides which allows you to use them right from birth until your child is ready for a full-size bed.

A mattress that is firm is ideal for infants, because it will provide the most support to their growing spines. A firm sleeping surface helps to reduce the risk of SIDS which is more likely to happen when a child's head is lowered into a mattress that is soft.

Look over the label on a firm mattress to ensure it is in compliance with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for the possibility of flammability, waterproofing lead, as well as other chemicals that could be a hazard to babies. You can also find certifications such as Greenguard, CertiPUR and GOTS which show that the mattress was tested for volatile organic compounds that can affect babies' respiratory and nervous systems.

The weight of the mattress is a further factor to take into consideration. If you are unable to lift heavy objects, or you don't wish to move an item that weighs a lot, you may want a mattress that is lighter. Newton Wovenaire, for example is only 8 pounds, while Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress - Dual Firmness weighs 20 pounds. This makes it one of the heavier mattresses featured in this review. It is also constructed of foam instead of inners with woven-core that makes it more maneuverable compared with a heavier traditional coil mattress.

Assembly

A crib that's easy to assemble is great for new parents. Find one with hardware that is securely secured with without sharp edges or rough spots that could rub your baby's skin. Avoid cribs with drop-sides and headboard/footboard cuts. These features don't meet the safety standards of today.

If you're looking for a crib, bear in mind that you'll likely require a toddler bed conversion kit (if you choose a convertible crib). Most manufacturers offer these kits on their own. These kits are usually inexpensive and will assist your child to make the transition from a smaller bed more easily.

Many new parents appreciate the longevity that can be found in the convertible crib and they're a great choice for families with several children. These cribs are designed to last, and they typically can be converted into an infant bed, daybed, or full-size bed.

The DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1 Crib is solid wood crib that's GREENGUARD Gold Certified and has four mattress-level heights. It has a traditional style and is available in white or slate grey to match every nursery decor. The crib has locking wheels so you can easily move it from room to room. It can fit the majority of twin mattresses. The crib took our test subjects only 23 minutes to assemble.

Another top-rated crib is the Sprout Crib is made with sustainable harvested Baltic birch, and it is compliant with all U.S., Canadian, Australian and European safety standards. It is a minimalist, stylish design that will be a perfect fit with any bedroom décor. The Sprout is one of the tiniest cribs we've test at 6kg, which makes it easy to move around and has an excellent travel bag.

The runner-up of our tests, the Oeuf Modern Crib is built using sustainably harvested New Zealand pine. It has won several awards from different parenting publications, including BabyCenter and Babble. It has a moderate-height profile and can be converted from an infant crib into a toddler bed with rail, or to a daybed that doesn't have rail. It's easy to assemble and has a lot of appeal. However, Baby Cot Bed is susceptible to scratches when used regularly.
