Bifold Door Repairs

Interior bifold doors can be used to connect various parts of your home. They are susceptible to damage and require repair at times.

If your bifold doors let in draughts, or rattling in the wind, it's a sign that your seals have started to wear down. This is a normal thing to happen over time.

Hinges

The hinges of your bifold door are an integral part of how easily it opens and closes. If they're damaged or bending the doors could become jammed or stop closing altogether. If this happens, you may require replacing hinges or adjust them. This is a simple process that doesn't require an expert.

First, make sure the hinges are properly installed in their brackets. If not then loosen the screw that holds the top of the door and then shift it to a position that will allow the hinge to sit firmly in the bracket. Then tighten the screw and repeat the process on the other side. When both sides are in place then tighten the screws on each side, and then test the door.

If the door isn't securing properly, it could be a sign of issues with the lock or the door frame. It could also be a small object tucked inside that is preventing the door from opening and closing properly.

The most common issue with bifold doors is that they begin to sag, typically because of a crack in one of the pivot pins. The doors can be difficult to open or close and may even scratch your floor when closed.

It's typically a simple and quick fix. The problem is usually caused by a small crack in the wood that can be repaired using carpenter's glue and a C-clamp. Begin by prying the pin out with the help of pliers or a screwdriver and then loosen the hole slightly and spread the glue with a little carpenter's. After the glue has been applied, place the pin in the clamp and let it sit for three to four hours before putting the door in place.

Another simple solution to this problem is to use a corner brace kit, which will fill in the crack and make the door easier to open and close. You can buy them from most hardware stores. It's also a good idea to grease the hinges, locks and rollers on a regular basis to ensure they function effectively. This will make it easier for doors to open or close over many years.

Rollers

The hinged rollers enable a bifolding door open and close smoothly. Over time, these may be worn out or loose. This can cause the door to become snagged and snag, making it hard to open or close.

This can be caused in a variety of cases by dirt or debris getting into the track or roller mechanism. This is usually a straightforward fix. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws that are on top for the roller brackets, and then push or pull the door to align them with the frame. Finally, make sure that the doors slide smoothly.

The other common problem that could cause a bifold door to stop working is that the rollers are not in alignment. This could be due to dust or other debris that has accumulated in the track or caused by an adjustment problem with the roller nut. It is easy to fix this by loosening the nut and adjusting it.

One or more pivot pins in the hinged system can develop cracks. These cracks can cause the door to bow and create a gap between frame and the door. This is a simple fix and can be done with carpenter's glue and a C clamp. First, remove the door and then pry one or more pivot pins using a screwdriver with a flat head. Then, apply a small amount carpenter's adhesive to the cracked area, and close the door with the clamp for three or four hours. After that, you can simply remount the pivot pins on the door's brackets.

From here, you should be able to remove the top track by pushing on the bottom of the spring-loaded pin. It is likely that you will need a helper to assist, since folding doors can be very heavy. Once you've removed the old door and replace it, you can put it back in place.
