The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the future generations would be able to read the words. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For instance dui, which was Bengali for verandah, was being used.

Origins

To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s, the company began to expand overseas in order to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.

Discography

With a name like Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings but they're actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The group started out as a quartet, and they recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to deliver an album that was a success or else they would pull them. Toto was able to achieve this feat with the help of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. However, the album also includes some slower, more jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and the distorted AOR that could seem like a complete blunder, but is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to help promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was busy with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
