The Benefits and Drawbacks of a 3 Wheeled Pushchair

A three-wheeled pushchair is perfect for those who regularly walk on rough terrain or jog. They are the best option if you need an automobile that can handle any terrain from busy streets to forest tracks.

Find models with front wheels that can be locked or swivelled. This will give you more flexibility. Larger wheels, both front and back offer a more comfortable ride on different terrains.

Manoeuvrability

Manoeuvrability is among the main advantages of a 3 wheel pushchair. The wheels are placed close together allowing the chassis to move and turn much more easily than a conventional four wheel pushchair. This makes them ideal for busy streets and shopping. Some models even have a pair of front wheels that can be locked and swivelled to provide additional maneuverability when required. The Roma Atlas has two wheels at the front, which are set close together and a smart lock that allows it to be as stable as a three-wheeler while still having the same maneuverability.

Many of our most popular 3 wheelers can be transformed from pram, stroller, car-seat and toddler seats as your child develops. This is great for those who intend to travel with your family, or take frequent trips to the store. The Baby Jogger Nipper is a great example. It comes with Hauck airwheels that are XL and a 360-degree lockable swivel wheel, and a suspension that lets it be used on any terrain.

The ickle Bubba Nipper is a different alternative. It's an all-terrain stroller with large puncture-proof tyres and great suspension that allows it to be used for both off-road excursions and smooth city pavements. It can be used from birth with the reversible seat or a carrycot compatible. It also comes with the ability to fold with one hand for easy storage in the boot and for airport travel.

The right wheels for your pushchair is essential depending on where you'll be using it most. Moulded wheels are great for city use but will not do well on rougher ground. If you are planning to move your pushchair off roads, you should consider pneumatic tyres. They are able to handle rough terrain.

For a pushchair that's designed to handle both rural and urban environments, take a look at our top-rated Bugaboo Fox Five All-Terrain pushchair. It has all the suspension and large wheels you'd expect from an all-terrain pushchair, but it's also a city pushchair that's extremely light and has a lockable front wheel.

Stability

There are numerous options to look out for that will enhance the stability of your buggy. For instance, certain models have a swivelling front wheel that can lock into place for extra stability on rough terrain. This can be particularly useful if you are going to use your pushchair off-road or for running, as it gives you the confidence to go any surface with ease.

Suspension is an additional feature for stability. It makes your buggy more comfortable ride, for both you and your baby especially on uneven terrain. Some brands also allow you to swap out tyres with different sizes so that you can tailor the performance of your pushchair to suit the type of terrain you will be taking it on.

If you're looking for a 3-wheeled pushchair that can be used on any terrain, think about buying a model that has air-filled tyres. They will give you an easier ride over bumps and are less prone to punctures than traditional wheels. These wheels will allow you to use your buggy on non-paved surfaces and can be used on various surfaces that include grass or sand, as well as mud.

All-terrain pushchairs tend to be slightly wider than standard pushchairs, but there are some excellent options that don't compromise stability or manoeuvrability. One of our favourites is the UPPAbaby Ridge which comes with numerous impressive features that make it suitable for off-road walking as well as jogging (once your child is old enough). It comes with large, foam filled never-flat tyres, adjustable suspension as well as a quick one-handed folding.

Another great all-terrain pushchair is the Bugaboo Fox 5 - this features the same all-terrain capabilities as the UPPAbaby Ridge and features great suspension large puncture-proof tyres, and an easy fold. It is compatible with a variety of car seats, and also can accommodate a carrycot. It's heavier than other 3-wheelers, but it's still a great option for parents who wish to have their pushchair capable of traveling across any terrain.

Weight

The drawback of strollers with three wheels is that they're heavy, particularly if you need to maneuver through bumpy terrain and kerbs. The larger rear wheels on a 3-wheeler add up to a greater overall weight than 4 wheelers which means you'll need more strength to lift them, particularly when folding them.

If you need a pushchair that can handle rough terrain and rocky tarmac it might be worth a look. These usually have special features, such as sturdy suspension and large puncture-proof tyres. Brands are increasingly designing all-terrain strollers equipped with tyres which are filled with gel or foam to stop them from becoming flat.

UPPAbaby's Ridge stroller is all-terrain and has a wide range of features that are child-friendly and will help it tackle different terrains with ease. The Ridge all-terrain pushchair has many parent-friendly features, including the ability to lock its front wheel, an easy fold that is one-handed with a large basket and adjustable handlebar. MFM reviewer Becky discovered that the Ridge was "very good on walks in woodlands as well as gravel tracks and market town cobbles".

iCandy is another brand that offers a selection of all terrain pushchairs. Their latest all-terrain model the Core is suitable from birth and can be used with a carrycot as well as car seat adaptors. 3 wheel buggy has a host of features that will make it a fantastic all-terrain pushchair - including large foam-filled, never-flat tyres as well as a great suspension system. The Core is a bit heavier than some other pushchairs for all-terrain use, but it's still light enough to be manoeuvrable on more rough terrain.

This kind of pushchair will come with large wheels both front and back, which will help you navigate rough, off-road terrain. Often they'll have more robust suspension as well as more puncture-proof tyres to stop them from becoming clogged with grass, sticks or mud.

It's an all-terrain model with a variety of impressive features, including a an easy suspension, a large basket, one-handed steering, and a quick one-handed fold.
