Pragmatics and Semantics A lot of contemporary philosophical theories are based on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective). Others take an approach that is more holistic to pragmatics, like relevance theory, which aims to determine how an utterance is understood by the hearer. However, this approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth. What exactly is pragmatism? Pragmatism is a viable alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. ????? ?? ??? initiated the concept, and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It was influential in a variety of areas of inquiry ranging from philosophy of science to theology however, it also found a place within ethics as well as aesthetics, philosophy of language and social theory. Pragmatists have also developed a broad variety of ideas and methods in fields like semiotics and philosophy of language, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, ethics, and theology. A resurgence of the classical pragmatism movement in the latter part of the 20th century led to a variety of new developments, including a 'near-side' pragmatics that is concerned with resolution of unclearness and ambiguity as well as the use of proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, and anaphors, as well as a 'far-side pragmatics that examines the semantics of discourses. What is the relationship between what is said and what is done? Semantics and Pragmatics are often thought of as being on opposite sides of the continuum, with semantics on the near side and pragmatics on the far side. Carston for instance claims that there are at least three main types of modern pragmatics that are: those who see it as a philosophical concept along the lines of Grice and others; those who concentrate on its interaction with grammar; and those who are concerned with utterance interpretation. Near-side pragmatics is believed include such issues as clarification of ambiguity or vagueness as well as references to proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphors, as well as presupposition. For example some philosophers have argued that pragmatism is merely a form of deconstructionism and is not an entirely new philosophical concept. In addition to these critics, the pragmatism of the past was challenged by technological and scientific developments. For instance, the pragmatists have had a difficult time reconciling their beliefs on science and the development of evolution theory that was created by Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist. Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third alternative to analytic and Continental philosophical traditions, and it has a variety of practical application. It is a growing field of study that has numerous schools of thought developing and incorporating elements of pragmatism into their own philosophy.
