How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster. 1. audi keys replacement is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way. If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40). Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay. 2. Injectors Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else. I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero. I don't know what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA! 3. Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. audi key replacement can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms. 4. ECU Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown. Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is they are quite affordable and readily available, especially in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice. 5. Tachometer A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected. The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
